For females, in particular, research shows that certain strains of probiotics may be better for helping maintain the health of the female reproductive system and urinary tract. For example, researchers have found that many women whose vaginal canals are colonized by lactobacilli have never had a UTI, compared to women who do not have this strain.

Probiotics proved more effective than a placebo at reducing the risk for UTI recurrence in children with a normal urinary tract after their first episode of febrile UTI, according to results of a randomized clinical trial published in the Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society.

In this study, we compared the effect of probiotic and placebo prophylaxis in young children with uncomplicated UTI and found that probiotics, with a higher rate of composite cure observed after 18 months of therapy, were superior to placebo,Simin Sadeghi-bojd, MD, PhD, and colleagues wrote. The lower incidence of UTI recurrence in the probiotic group suggests that greater UTI-free survival with probiotics provides additional clinical benefit for children with a normal urinary tract.

Sadeghi-bojd and colleagues randomly assigned 181 children, aged 4 months to 5 years, with a normal urinary tract following recovery from their first febrile UTI to receive either a probiotic mixture or placebo. UTI-free survival at 18 months was the primary endpoint, with median time to first UTI as the secondary endpoint.

Which Probiotics Should You Add To Your Diet

Probiotics are commonly found in food. They are also available in dietary supplements.

Food. Many foods have good bacteria. However, these bacteria donât always survive strong stomach acids and may not be able to add to gut health. Other foods have probiotic strains that can survive the digestion process and successfully reach the gut.

âWhether a food truly has beneficial probiotics depends on three things: the levels of good bacteria contained when eaten, whether the good bacteria can survive passage through the stomach, and whether those strains of bacteria are able to support your health.â

These are a few foods that provide a good source of probiotics:

    • dried beans and other legumes

Dietary supplements. Probiotics are also available as capsules, powders, liquids, and more. The wide variety of available products can make it difficult to determine which ones offer health benefits based on science.

Some of the best probiotic strains for health include:

Lactobacillus acidophilus. Lactobacillus acidophilus balances potentially harmful bacteria that can otherwise grow in your gut due to illness or antibiotics.

Lactobacillus fermentum. Lactobacillus fermentum strengthens your immune system and prevents gastrointestinal and upper respiratory infections.

Lactobacillus casei/paracasei. Lactobacillus casei/paracasei can ease inflammatory bowel disease â a common disorder that causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation).

Antibiotics Prevent Utis Better Than Probiotics

By Andrew M. Seaman, Reuters Health

    6 Min Read

NEW YORK Antibiotics are still better than probiotics at preventing urinary tract infections, but at least good bacteria dont add to a persons antibiotic resistance, a new study concludes.

Recurring UTIs are common among some women and low-dose antibiotics are sometimes used to prevent them. The worry is that overuse of the drugs also reduces their effectiveness by making disease-causing bacteria like E. coli resistant.

This is an increasing worldwide problem, resulting into less and less treatment options for bacterial infections in all countries of the world, Dr. Suzanne Geerlings, from the Academic Medical Center at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands and one of the new studys authors, wrote in an email to Reuters Health.

Geerlings and her colleagues recruited 252 women between January 2005 and September 2007 for a trial to compare the use of antibiotics and probiotics to prevent UTIs.

The participants, who lived in communities surrounding the medical center, were all postmenopausal a time when vulnerability to UTIs increases because of hormonal changes, according to the researchers.

All the participants reported having had at least three UTIs in the year before the trial began, and the average number was seven.

All the participants also took placebo pills so the patients and the people dispensing the pills wouldnt know who received which treatment to minimize any influence on the studys results.

May Improve Symptoms Of Certain Gastrointestinal Diseases

Some of the most well-studied uses of probiotic supplements relate to the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases like irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease .

One review of 11 studies found that 7 of them reported that probiotic supplementation significantly improved symptoms like bloating and abdominal pain in IBS patients, compared with a placebo, while the remaining 4 studies did not find significant improvements.

The review also found that multi-strain probiotics used for at least 8 weeks seemed to be most effective at improving IBS symptoms .

Notably, Lactobacillus acidophilus was present in all of the multi-strain supplement studies that reported significantly improved symptoms .

Multi-strain probiotics may improve some symptoms in those with IBD, though they appear to be less effective for people with Crohns disease.

Evidence is currently limited, and well-designed studies are needed (

While some people, including those with IBS and certain types of IBD, may benefit from specific strains of probiotics, in general, most healthy people who follow a nutritious diet and healthy lifestyle do not need to supplement with probiotics.

Plus, some researchers are concerned that the widespread use of probiotics may lead to antibiotic resistance and warn that many studies investigating the safety and efficacy of probiotics are of poor quality .

Who Should Buy Probiotics For Women

Your gut bacteria play a role in some of the most important aspects of health: a healthy gut microbiome is related to everything from keeping yourself at a healthy weight to gastrointestinal function to maintaining good mental wellbeing.

Probiotics are supplements that are specifically designed to supply your body with beneficial bacteria that have been associated with these types of outcomes.

Often, these bacteria are the kind of microbes that occur in fermented foods like cheese, yogurt, kimchi, and kombucha. Probiotics provide live cultures of these bacteria at much higher concentrations than what youd get in food sources.

Womens specific probiotic needs can be different than mens, and women can garner some distinctive benefitsresistance to urinary tract infections, for example, which are much more common in women than in men, as well as protection against yeast infections.

If you are a woman who is consistently encountering gastrointestinal problems like gas, bloating, and diarrhea, or if you have a history of yeast or urinary tract infections, a probiotic supplement might be just what you need.

New research even suggests that probiotics can be useful for treating and preventing allergies, and some of the latest science coming out also suggests that taking a probiotic supplement might be a good idea for women looking to lose weight as well. Women looking for these specific health benefits should strongly consider a probiotic supplement.

Should Probiotics Be Shelf Stable Or Refrigerated

Depending on how a probiotic is manufactured, it may require refrigeration, or it may be safely stored at room temperature. Neither is better, but pick the type that best fits your lifestyle! Most probiotics are designed to be taken daily, so If youre traveling often, opt for a shelf stable package that you can toss in your carry on. Or if youre someone who cant remember your probiotic unless its in your purse, thats another time to pick a non-refrigerated option. In either case, remember to check the best by date.

Probiotics For Preventing Urinary Tract Infections In People With Bladder Dysfunction After A Nervous System Injury

Best Probiotics For Women’s Ph Balance – Femina Probiotics Vaginal Health & Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

    What is the issue?

Bladder function can be altered after an injury to the nervous system and most often happens in conditions like multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury or stroke. This type of bladder dysfunction is termed neuropathic bladder. The bladder dysfunction in people with a nervous system injury increases their risk of frequent bladder infections. Currently, there is no effective way to prevent bladder infections in these people. Longterm use of antibiotics is not encouraged as it results in reduced effectiveness of that antibiotic. Probiotics are bacteria that can have a beneficial effect on the body. Some evidence already exists to suggest that probiotics can prevent bladder infections in postmenopausal women.

    What did we do?

This review investigates the evidence for the effectiveness of probiotics on the prevention of bladder infections in people with bladder dysfunction after a nervous system injury.

    What did we find?

We did not identify any studies investigating whether other probiotics and other administration routes is effective in preventing urinary tract infections in people with bladder dysfunction.

It is uncertain if probiotics prevent urine infections in people with bladder dysfunction after a nervous system injury. Further robustly designed studies are necessary.
