Prevention And Treatment Of Cystitis

How to Prevent a Urinary Tract Infection

A doctor will treat cystitis with antibiotics when it is certain that your symptoms are caused by bacteria.

However, in many cases, cystitis will clear up by itself, if you maintain good hygiene and make sure you drink plenty of fluids.

We recommend using Intim Wash, Femigel and Femi Daily from Australian Bodycare to maintain good, healthy hygiene in the intimate area. Good hygiene is an effective way of preventing conditions such as cystitis.

Additionally, you can supplement plentiful fluids and good hygiene with over-the-counter pain killers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. This is not as effective as antibiotics, however, so if the symptoms do not clear up, it is important that you see a doctor.

What Else You Can Do To Protect Against Utis:

  • Drink lots of water. Then drink some more.
  • Take a cranberry supplement or drink cranberry juice daily. Try AZO Cranberry® Caplets, AZO Cranberry® Softgels or AZO Cranberry® Gummies as a convenient way to maintain your healthy urinary tract without extra sugar.*
  • Wipe from front to back when you go to the bathroom.
  • If you are sexually active, go to the bathroom right after you have sex.
  • Go to the bathroom as soon as you feel the need dont wait until the urge becomes strong.
  • Use tampons instead of sanitary pads and change them every three to four hours.
  • Wear clean cotton underwear that will allow air circulation and discourage the warm, moist environment necessary for bacteria growth.
  • Don’t hang around in a wet bathing suit or on a damp towel. Get into dry stuff as soon as you can.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes like ultra skin-tight jeans.

What To Expect At Home

UTIs can lead to infection. Most often the infection occurs in the bladder itself. At times, the infection can spread to the kidneys.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain or burning when you urinate
  • Needing to urinate more often
  • Hard to empty your bladder all the way
  • Strong need to empty your bladder

These symptoms should improve soon after you begin taking antibiotics.

If you are feeling ill, have a low-grade fever, or some pain in your lower back, these symptoms will take 1 to 2 days to improve, and up to 1 week to go away completely.

Urinary Infections In Children

A urinary infection in a child needs to be investigated as it may indicate a more serious condition.

The most common urinary system condition is urinary reflux. With this condition, the bladder valve isnt working properly and allows urine to flow back to the kidneys, increasing the risk of a kidney infection.

Urinary reflux and the associated infections can scar or permanently damage the kidney, and can also lead to:

  • high blood pressure
  • toxaemia in pregnancy
  • kidney failure.

Urinary reflux tends to run in families, so its important to screen children as early as possible if a close relative is known to have the problem.

Wear The Right Underwear

Saving Our Sons: UTI Resource Page

Silky underwear may feel nice against your skin, but only breathable fabrics like cotton avoid trapping moisture, which can lead to increased risk of a UTI. Synthetic materials and tight-fitted clothing can trap moisture and become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Urinary tract infections are common and easy to treat. Many people will get at least one infection in their life. However, UTIs are also easy to prevent. Following the above tips should help a great deal in reducing your chances of getting one. And, if you ever suspect that you might have a UTI, make an appointment with your health care provider as soon as you can.

How To Feel Better

If your healthcare professional prescribes you antibiotics:

  • Take antibiotics exactly as your healthcare professional tells you.
  • Do not share your antibiotics with others.
  • Do not save antibiotics for later. Talk to your healthcare professional about safely discarding leftover antibiotics.

Drink plenty of water or other fluids. Your healthcare professional might also recommend medicine to help lessen the pain or discomfort. Talk with your healthcare professional if you have any questions about your antibiotics.

What Can Happen If A Uti Is Not Treated

If treated right away, a UTI is not likely to damage your urinary tract. But if your UTI is not treated, the infection can spread to the kidneys and other parts of your body. The most common symptoms of kidney infection are fever and pain in the back where the kidneys are located. Antibiotics can also treat kidney infections.

Sometimes the infection can get in the bloodstream. This is rare but life-threatening.

Older Adults Dont Need Powerful Antibiotics For Utis

Treatment for UTIs should begin with narrow-spectrum antibiotics, say Dr. Lathia and Dr. Goldman.

These drugs are less likely to lead to antibiotic resistance and problematic side effects than broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Today, amoxicillin is commonly prescribed as first-line treatment for UTIs in older adults.

Other common narrow-spectrum must be used with caution when patients have chronic kidney disease or take blood pressure medication, as many older adults do or because their side effects can be serious in older adults.

Can Urinary Tract Infections Be Prevented Or Avoided

There are many lifestyle choices that can help you prevent UTIs. These are some of the things you can do to protect yourself from them:

  • Drink plenty of water to flush out bacteria. For some people, drinking cranberry juice may also help prevent urinary tract infections. However, if youre taking warfarin, check with your doctor before using cranberry juice to prevent urinary tract infections. Your doctor may need to adjust your warfarin dose or you may need to have more frequent blood tests.
  • Dont hold your urine. Urinate when you feel like you need to. Some children dont go to the bathroom often enough. If your child does this, teach him or her to go to the bathroom several times each day.
  • Wipe from front to back after bowel movements. Teach your child to wipe correctly.
  • Urinate after having sex to help wash away bacteria.
  • Use enough lubrication during sex. Try using a small amount of lubricant before sex if youre a little dry.
  • If you get urinary tract infections often, you may want to avoid using a diaphragm as a birth control method. Ask your doctor about other birth control choices.
  • Avoid taking or giving your child bubble baths.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing , and dress your child in loose-fitting clothing.
  • If you are uncircumcised, wash the foreskin regularly. If you have an uncircumcised boy, teach him how to wash his foreskin.

And It Won’t Hurt To Try These

Like many women, you may have memorized the following age-old advice for preventing UTIs:

  • Wipe from front to back.

  • Urinate before and after sex.

  • Drink lots of water.

  • Avoid tight underpants and jeans.

These suggestions are directed at flushing the bladder and keeping E. coli from spreading into the urinary tract. Although studies have failed to show that they prevent either primary or recurrent UTIs, there’s no harm in trying them, Dr. Gupta says. “They can’t hurt, and if they help, you’re ahead of the game.”

Urinary Tract Infection | How To Prevent UTI (2018)

Some people are at greater risk than others of developing UTIs. These include:

Dont Forget The Yogurt

Yogurt that contains plenty of probiotic cultures is a terrific way to fill your body with the good type of bacteria that fight off and kill the type of bacteria that can cause infections. Since a great deal of your immune system is located in your gut, it can help to strengthen your immune system. Try to eat one or two cups of probiotic yogurt with live cultures each day. You can also eat fermented foods that naturally contain probiotics such as tempeh, sauerkraut, pickles, kefir, and miso.

What Is The Urinary Tract

The urinary tract makes and stores urine, one of the body’s liquid waste products. The urinary tract includes the following parts:

  • Kidneys: These small organs are located on back of your body, just above the hips. They are the filters of your body removing waste and water from your blood. This waste becomes urine.
  • Ureters: The ureters are thin tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to your bladder.
  • Bladder: A sac-like container, the bladder stores your urine before it leaves the body.
  • Urethra: This tube carries the urine from your bladder to the outside of the body.

What May Cause A Uti After Sex

The urethra is the tube through which urine exits the body from the bladder. In women, this tube is short, making it quicker and easier for bacteria to enter the opening and infiltrate the bladder.

The bacteria that cause a UTI live in the area around the anus, Dr. Yavagal says. Sex can shift bacteria toward the front. From there, its just a short hop up the urethra into the bladder, where it can multiply and cause a UTI.

Urinary Tract Infections In Men Are Rare But Not Impossible

How to a Prevent Urinary Tract Infection in the Elderly ...

Even though the great majority with urinary tract infections are women, men can also get them.

When men have urinary tract infections, they are divided into two categories:

  • A lower urinary tract infection, which affects the bladder and urethra
  • An upper urinary tract infection which reaches the renal cavity and the kidneys
  • In most cases of urinary tract infection in men, their own faecal bacteria spread via the urethra up to the bladder.

An uncomplicated urinary tract infection is called cystitis in men and is very similar to cystitis in women.

In contrast, complex urinary tract infections in men are inflammation where factors in or outside the urinary system may have longer-lasting and more serious effects.

However, urinary tract infections are relatively rare in men, and do not affect men at any particular age.

Are Some People At A Higher Risk Of Getting A Uti

Women get more UTIs than men. This is because women have a shorter urethra the tube that brings urine out of the bladder. This allows bacteria to enter the urethra and bladder more easily.

Other factors that can further increase the risk of UTI include:

    • frequent sexual activity
