How To Position The Drain Bag
- Always connect the bag to the foot of the bed.
- Ensure that the bag to catheter tubing does not get kinked.
- Always keep the bag below the user’s bladder and catheter during use. This includes when the user uses a wheelchair or walks, and during gurney transport. Never place it on the user’s legs or abdomen during transport.
- Never place this bag on the ground.
- Run the tubing in a straight line over the user’s leg and attach it with sheet clips to the sheets.
- To empty, hold the spine and lift the meter.

- First, use warm water and soap to wash hands for at least twenty seconds.

- Hold the tubing over a specimen container or toilet.
- Without touching the valve tip or allowing it to touch the toilet, release the emptying valve.
- Allow the urine to completely drain from the bag.
- Again, wash hands with soap and warm water for twenty seconds or longer.

- Use asecptic techniques and a needless safe sampling port for retrieving specimens.
- Always wash hands with warm water and soap before and after each use.
- Ensure that the catheter is inserted properly. Make sure it is entirely inserted, that is balloon is completely inflated, and that the correct amount of sterile water is being used.
- Never use the same collection container for more than one patient when draining.
- Be attentive to the user’s needs and inspect the bag’s positioning regularly. Reposition the urine bag, its tubing, or user whenever needed.
