Weve covered UTI test inaccuracies in more detail, and its a good idea to brush up on the topic before your next test.

Why Is My Home Uti Test Negative When I Feel Like I Have A Uti

Its a great question, and one we hear a lot. And theres a good answer:

If you do an at home UTI test, and it indicates you dont have an infection despite your symptoms, you have good reason to question the test itself.

Regardless of how many indicators are on the UTI test strip, it is not accurate.

Given the inaccuracy of home UTI test strips, particularly when it comes out negative, your symptoms may be a better indicator of a UTI.

This also applies to the UTI test strips used in clinics and hospitals. Despite what you may have been told, there is no such thing as an accurate UTI test strip.

My urine was visibly cloudy and it burned when I went to pee. My doctor used a UTI test strip in my urine sample and said everything on the test strip was normal. I was told I didnt have an infection even though Ive had UTIs before and I know exactly what they feel like.

Every brand of home UTI test works on the principles laid out above, and they all have the same limitations.

The test works by measuring both Leukocytes and Nitrites. This is the same method used by many doctors, giving you equally reliable results.

  • NITRITE – Certain bacteria change nitrate to nitrite in your urine. These bacteria can often cause a UTI, which is why they can be a strong indicator.
  • LEUKOCYTES – Also called white blood cells, these are produced by the body in response to the presence of an infection.

Still Unsure Try An At Home Uti Test

At home tests are a great way to detect a UTI before going to see your doctor. Some, like AZO Test Strips®, are the same urinary tract infection tests used in many doctors offices. The most reliable, over-the-counter UTI home test available, AZO Test Strips®offer two UTI tests in one including both Leukocyte and Nitrite tests. These tests performed together are more effective for detecting a UTI than testing for nitrite alone.

If you get a positive result, its time to call your doctor with the results. If your result is negative but you are experiencing symptoms, you should still call your doctor. A small number of people may not have detectable nitrites even though an infection is present.

    Drinking Plenty Of Water

Often simple things in life are most overlooked. Drinking more water can help cleanse the system and is a proven and effective method to supplement your clinical UTI treatment. Drinking at least eight to ten glasses of water a day promotes frequent urination that helps flush out the bacteria from the urinary tract. In addition to reducing the infection stress in the body, consuming more than usual water helps alleviate discomfort due to the infection and can also reduce downtime. You can also mix it with various fruits, vegetables, green juices, vitamins, and minerals to fight against the disease and enable a more robust immune response. However, stay away from sugary drinks to avoid unnecessary/unwanted sugar consumption. You can regulate your water intake to the extent that you pass clear dilute urine four to six times daily. Frequent urination can reduce electrolyte balance in the body, so ensure you are smartly hydrating to keep up with your energy levels. Also, once you have an urge to pass urine, it is advised to empty your bladder and not hang on for too long. Remember, your goal is to get the bacteria out of the system and reduce the infection stress on the urinary tract. While going too often to the restroom may be frustrating, it is essential in cleansing your system.

    How It Is Done

  • Check the expiration date on the package. Do not use a test kit after its expiration date. The chemicals in the kit may not work as they should after that date.
  • Carefully read the instructions that come with your test before you do the test.
  • Follow the step-by-step directions.
  • Compare your test strip with the colors provided with the test kit.

This test usually doesnt cause any pain or discomfort.

What Home Uti Strip Test Indicators Mean

Easy@Home UTI Test Strips Urinary Tract Infection 20 Pouches/Box (UTI ...
    Indicator
    – Fever
Sugar The most common cause of sugar in the urine is diabetes, but it can also indicate other rare health conditions.
Ketone Ketones in the urine can also be caused by diabetes, but can also be a result of a state of ketosis, where the body burns fat instead of sugar for fuel.
Bilirubin Bilirubin in the urine may be an early indicator of liver damage, however, this indicator is known to be highly inaccurate.
Urobilinogen Urobilinogen is a by-product of Bilirubin production and may indicate issues with the liver, among other health issues.
Nitrite Some bacteria that cause UTIs make an enzyme that changes urinary nitrates into nitrites. So if the strip is positive for nitrites, the conclusion is that you have a bacterial UTI. Note that many bacteria do not create nitrites in your urine.
Red blood cells Blood can appear in urine due to strenuous exercise, but generally, blood in the urine is taken to be a sign of infection, inflammation, disease, or injury to the urinary tract.
White blood cells A positive strip result for white blood cells in your urine indicates an infection in your urinary tract, or possibly, kidney disease.

Easy@home Urinary Tract Infection Test Strips Q& a

Leukocytes: White blood cell presence may signal infection.

Nitrites: Presence may point to urinary tract infection or other infection.

A morning urine sample is the best for testing.

WHY: The urinalysis that tests specifically for nitrites requires time to convert nitrates to nitrites. First morning urine is best, assuming you have slept for at least 4 hours without urinating, and the bacteria has had sufficient time to complete the conversion, and provide a concentrated sample for testing.

Wait to remove the test strip from the bottle until you are ready to test, and be sure to close the bottle tightly after removing the needed amount of strips.

There are 2 ways you can conduct the test by holding the test strip for 1 to 2 seconds in your urine stream, or by collecting a sample in a clean, dry, and sterile cup, and dipping the test into the urine sample for 1 to 2 seconds. For the most accurate results, it is best to get a “clean catch” sample.

After removing the strip from the urine immediately bring the edge of the strip into contact with an absorbent material to remove excess urine. You don’t want the urine to mix the different chemicals between panels.

Read the results for Nitrite at 1 minute and for Leukocytes at 2 minutes. Do not read the results after 3 minutes, as the results can change over time and cause an inaccurate reading.

NOTE: Consult with your physician before making any medical decisions.

How To Collect A Home Uti Test Sample Like A Pro

Whatever home UTI test you opt for, youll need a top notch urine sample for the most accurate results.

Fortunately, all of these testing methods require urine to be collected in a similar way. Its always best to double check any instructions provided in an at home UTI test kit, but below are some basic guidelines.

“Ive provided so many urine samples now, but Im never sure how full the container should be. So I make it different each time, hoping the doctor will say oh wow, thats way more than we need, or maybe, great job, thats perfect. But he never reacts. His poker face is unbreakable.”

Theres no need to worry what your sample looks or smells like. After all, thats why youre getting tested because there is an issue. Were sure youre doing a good job already, but here are a few tips to check your urine sample technique against:

If youre posting your sample, you will most likely be given a few additional collection instructions. Pay close attention to these!

    Standard Urine Culture Testing Tips

Although we know standard UTI testing is inaccurate, some individuals do find an answer.

I got this UTI that just would not go away. After a few rounds of antibiotics my doctor had my urine tested. The results showed the cause of my UTI was a different bacteria than she first suspected. She gave me a different antibiotic and it worked!

Standard UTI testing may be a road you wish to go down, particularly if you have not had your urine tested and you get acute UTI symptoms regularly.

Given the issues with UTI testing , we thought wed provide a few tips below on increasing the likelihood of getting an accurate result with standard urine testing, should you choose to pursue it.

While we dont usually recommend using techniques that have been shown to be so flawed, there are very few options for UTI testing in most regions. So instead of dismissing it completely, well discuss below how you can get the most out of whats available.

The Issues With Standard UTI Testing You May Be Able to Minimize

As we covered in our testing section, one of the issues with the standard urine culture test is that the threshold for bacteria concentration in the urine is too high to catch many infections.

While many labs still use the threshold of a minimum colony forming unit count of 105 per milliliter of cultured urine, females with symptomatic UTIs may present with CFU counts as low as 102/mL. For this reason, a number of recent guidelines recommend decreasing the threshold to 103/mL.

    Are Test Results Accurate

When conducted by a health professional, urine dipstick testing can support a UTI diagnosis if you have symptoms of a UTI. However, evidence is limited about the accuracy of at-home UTI testing.

One of the most significant risks for misleading results occurs when people use an at-home UTI test when they have no symptoms. Even positive test results for both leukocytes and nitrites do not suggest a UTI in people without symptoms.

False positive test results mean that at-home UTI test results are positive despite not having a UTI. These misleading results may be caused by:

    • Trichomoniasis, a common STD
    • Vaginal secretions in the test sample
    • Ingesting substances that turn the urine red, such as beets or certain medications
    • Improper collection or storage of the urine specimen

False negative test results mean that at-home UTI test results are negative despite actually having a UTI. These results may be caused by:

    • Less common microbes causing a UTI
    • Protein in the urine
    • High amounts of vitamin C in the urine

Concerns about the accuracy of at-home UTI tests should be discussed with a doctor and the company providing at-home test kits.
