The critical factor in avoiding calculi in goats is by providing an adequate diet to the goats. If calculi are becoming a regular issue in the goats, then it is better to change the regimen of the food. Offer the goats with a free choice browsing and good quality hay to reduce the amount of grain concentrates.
Prevention is always better then cures. The best prevention of calculi is to provide goats with a diet that contain phosphorous and calcium in a ratio of 1: 2. The calcium and phosphorous ratio should not go below 1:1 in the feed. The higher level of calcium in the feed will reduce the phosphorous absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
Prevent to add phosphorous and magnesium in the diet. The diet of the goats should have sufficient amount of vitamin A. Cereal grains like barley, corn, etc. have low phosphorous to calcium ration. Anyone raising goats should be aware of those two little words that cause such a horrible problem. Whether you have backyard goats or a whole herd of show animals, you have or will have to deal with Urinary Calculi at some point. So what is this menace, how do we treat it and better yet how do we prevent it from happening in the first place. With winter coming or in some parts of the country already there, this problem will become more prevalent due to your animals not consuming large amounts of water.
What are Urinary Calculi?Urinary Calculi is the formation of crystals or stones in the urinary tract which block the elimination of urine from the body. Most often these crystals are formed due to a metabolic imbalance in the body caused by feeding too much grain to bucks and wethers. This is most commonly found in show wethers, or bucks being given large amounts of a high-concentrate feed along with low amounts of roughage or hay.
There are several different types of crystals or stones but the one most prevalent with home based breeders is struvite crystals. Struvite crystals are formed when the calcium phosphorus ratio is off in the diet, and feeding low amount s of hay. In the winter, when goats dont drink as much water, this can compound the problem.

Signs Of Urinary Stones In Goats And Sheep
Trevor began yelling on a Sunday evening. Since his brother had died from urinary stones, I was watching for any symptoms.
Trevor exhibited the classic signs of urinary tract blockage. Having seen it in our wethered sheep, it was easily recognized. No fever was present.
The constant cries, the stretched out stance, and the rejection of food gave me a pit in my stomach. Other possible symptoms could be biting at their sides, swollen abdomen, straining to urinate, dribbling urine with no stream, and a swollen penis.
First thing in the morning I called our livestock vet, and brought Trevor right to his office. The vet agreed with my non-professional diagnosis and examined Trevor. Unfortunately the blockage was not near the opening, or urethral process, of the penis. When the blockage is near the opening, a procedure can be done that snips off the urethral process.
I opted to have the vet insert a catheter to try to dislodge the blockage. This did not work since Trevor is so small. The smallest catheter was still too large. Dwarf goat breeds are very tiny.

What Are Urinary Stones Made Of
Urinary stones are comprised of non absorbed phosphate salts. The main cause of urinary stone formation occurs when feed percentages of calcium and phosphorus are improperly balanced.
When small ruminants are fed a balanced diet combined with forage and hay, excess phosphorus is in the saliva, and excreted through feces. If grain is overfed, or is improperly formulated, and contains excess phosphorus, the excess ends up being excreted through the urinary tract. Lack of water can also play a part in urinary stones.
Now add in early neutering, thus stopping urethra growth, and you have all the pieces in place for a perfect storm. Bucks, rams, and females can have urinary stones, but have a better chance of eliminating the calculi.

These blockages occur almost exclusively in males, especially castrated males. The urethra of females and intact males are usually larger, making blockages less likely. The most common clinical signs are lethargy and loss of appetite combined with straining. Owners often interpret this straining as constipation, but it is exceedingly rare for sheep or goats to become constipated. Animals often bleat or moan constantly with complete blockages, which are very painful. If left untreated, there is a small chance of the stone passing, but more likely the bladder will rupture. It is difficult to save animals once this occurs and early treatment leads to the best and most humane outcome.
Medical treatment includes a urinary acidifier to dissolve the stones and crystals, anti-inflammatories for pain and to reduce swelling in the urinary tract, dietary modification, and antibiotics if there is an indication of urinary tract infection. If blockage is complete, minor field surgery under sedation unblocks a significant number of cases. Medical treatment is still necessary follow up, as there are likely more stones in the bladder waiting to cause another blockage. When field surgery is unsuccessful, more significant surgery can be considered as an option. Outcomes are generally best when these surgeries are performed in a hospital setting.
