Tips For Caregivers On Dealing With Hallucinations & Delusions

How Can Probiotics Help Prevent Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)?

Consult a physician if your loved one is having delusions or hallucinations, to rule out other causes unrelated to dementia. Mental illness and medical conditions such as migraines, brain tumors, epilepsy, urinary tract infections, and dehydration can all be causes.

Resist the need to stop or control difficult behaviors. Think carefully about whether or not your loved one is causing a problem. If the answer is no, try letting it be. This is not to say that you have to lie to or humor your loved one you can be honest while also showing respect. For example, you might say, I dont hear or see anyone outside the window, but I know you do, and you seem worried.

Consider the situation. Investigate why a hallucination or delusion is occurring in that particular moment. Beyond mental and medical causes, there can also be environmental and social causes as well.

Keep a journal to record when, where, and how your loved one experiences delusions or hallucinations. Record how your loved one is behaving, and what sorts of events have happened recently.

Control the environment. Make sure there is sufficient lighting in the room and not too many distractions. A radio or TV, for example, might cause your loved one to hear voices and not understand that whats coming from the speakers is not actually in the room. Also, pulling curtains or shades can provide comfort for someone afraid of being watched.

He Returned To Normal In The Morning

When morning came, the behavior continued initially, but within thirty minutes of sunup, his mind was clear, and the hallucinations gone. He has terrible sleep apnea which contributed to our assumption of oxygen deprivation. If our theory of low oxygen or high CO2 levels was accurate, then the imbalance was probably triggering the delirium. It seemed to fit in with the picture of him taking a nap, having an oxygen decline with sleep apnea, trigger the delirium all night and get better in the morning.

So, we went with that theory until this past month when it happened again but no pneumonia.

Confusion Is A Common Sign Of Uti In Seniors

Common medical conditions can cause seniors to suddenly show dementia-like symptoms or cause existing dementia symptoms to worsen significantly. One of the most common is a urinary tract infection .

Seniors are the most likely group of people to have a UTI. Theyre also the group thats least likely to have the usual symptoms like pain during urination, fever, or a frequent urge to go.

Instead, many caregivers find out their older adults have a UTI because theres a sudden change in behavior. Someone who suddenly cant do something they could a week ago might have a UTI. Falls, recent incontinence, or loss of appetite can also be signs of an infection.

The majority of studies reported confusion as delirium , followed by a few reporting confusion , altered mental state , and mental status changes , with one study reporting both delirium and altered mental status . Twelve studies analysed the correlation between suspected UTI or bacteriuria and confusion .

Does Taking An Antibiotic After Sex Prevent Utis

Can Probiotics Help With Urinary Tract Infection

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, having sex three or more times a week increases your risk for recurrent UTIs. Your risk is also increased if you use a diaphragm or spermicide products, regardless of the frequency of sexual activity. If you experience recurrent UTIs, changing your method of contraception should be the first thing you consider.

If you continue to suffer from UTIs and they are getting in the way of living a normal life, taking a preventive antibiotic could be an option. Taking regular antibiotics is not a risk-free treatment though, so have a conversation with your provider about whether this is right for you. Taking an antibiotic before or after sex can prevent recurrent UTIs especially if UTIs repeatedly show up 24 hours after intercourse.

During sex, bacteria can get into the urinary tract and cause infections. Antibiotics work by fighting these bacteria. E. coli is the most common bacteria that causes UTIs. Common antibiotics used to treat UTIs are nitrofurantoin, cephalexin, or trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole .

A clinical trial showed that only 2 out of 16 women who took TMP/SMX right after sex had recurrent UTIs compared to 9 out of 11 women who had a sugar pill. The results were the same regardless of how often the women had sex.

What Are The Different Types Of Probiotics

Probiotic supplements, foods, and beverages contain bacteria and/or yeasts. Up until the 1960s, the only gut microflora that they were able to identify were clostridia, lactobacilli, enterococci, and E. coli. Since then, innovative techniques have discovered many more bacteria.

There are several different kinds of probiotics, and their health benefits are determined by the job that they do in the gut. They must be identified by their genus, species, and probiotic strain level. Here is a list of probiotics and their possible health benefits.

1. Lactobacillus

There are more than 50 species of lactobacilli. They are naturally found in the digestive, urinary, and genital systems. Foods that are fermented, like yogurt, and dietary supplements also contain these bacteria. Lactobacillus has been used for treating and preventing a wide variety of diseases and conditions.

Some of the lactobacilli found in foods and supplements are Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. acidophilus DDS-1, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Lactobacillus plantarium, Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus johnsonii, and Lactobacillus gasseri.

How To Tell If Someone Is Confused

If a person is confused, they may:

  • not be able to think or speak clearly or quickly
  • not know where they are
  • struggle to pay attention or remember things
  • see or hear things that are not there

Try asking the person their name, their age and todayâs date. If they seem unsure or cannot answer you, they probably need medical help.

Could Probiotics Help With Cystitis

As a healthcare professional you are probably aware that cystitis is inflammation of the bladder typically caused by a bladder infection, making urination extremely painful. It mostly occurs in sexually active women for some it is rare and for others it can happen several times a year. Symptoms include a frequent sensation of needing to pass urine even when little or no urine is present, blood in the urine, backache, lower abdominal pain, and nausea.

You may want to let patients know that they can help prevent cystitis by drinking plenty of water, taking cranberry supplements or sugar-free juice, wiping correctly after going to the toilet, and always urinating as soon as possible after sexual intercourse. Some women find that using condoms can help avoid infection. Keeping your middle warm, especially in cold weather, can also offer some protection â Some women also find that keeping their tummy warm can help â with extra layers or perhaps a Japanese haramaki tummy wrap. Short-term antibiotics are often prescribed for serious bouts of cystitis.

What Is The Urinary Microbiome

How do probiotics help with urinary tract infections?

Scientists believed for many years that the urinary tract was sterile, until very recently. Thanks to advanced technologies in metagenomics, research has shown that certain microbes do exist in the urinary tract, albeit at low numbers. The most common genera present are Lactobacillus , Gardnerella, Cornyebacterium, Streptococcus, Actinomyces and Staphylococcus8-10. This differs to the microbiomes found in the gut, mouth and skin, and, like most of these human microbiomes, the urinary microbiome is unique to each individual.

Despite this, there are some similarities between the urinary and vaginal microbiome. Both regions are dominant in lactobacilli and some of the genera present are similar. However, it is not clear how these microbiomes interact with one another.

Generally, no definitive healthy urinary microbiome has been defined, however some suggestions have been posited. A study in 2013 looked at how the urinary microbiome can differ between individuals of different age and genders11. The researchers proposed that actually a core microbiome can be observed, but may differ slightly depending on age. A core profile was seen across all women, but additional types of bacteria were seen within the different age groups , especially in the eldest age group.

Urinary Tract Infection Probiotics May Help

March 10, 2020 by Clare Fleishman MS RDN

Urinary tract infections can be hard to shake.

The chance of recurrenceafter the first episode in healthy 1829 year-old women has been reported as24%. Unfortunately, the traditional treatment of antibiotics may causeresistance. For this reason, other therapies are being explored.

Urinary Tract Infections: Statistics

We are seeing the incidence rates of UTIs increase annually. A global study in 2013 found over 92 million people suffered with UTIs worldwide1. Furthermore, the study found a 16% rise in UTI numbers from 1990 to 2013. In the UK, UTIs in the primary care system have increased 102% from 2001 to 20112, and in 2011, the Health Protection Agency estimated 14% of all antibiotics prescribed were for UTIs. This costs the NHS at least £124 million a year3, 4.

How Can You Determine If Your Dog Has A Uti Without Going To A Vet

A UTI test is the best way to determine whether or not your pup has UTI without stepping foot in a veterinarian clinic. Through a urine sample, vets can confirm a dogs UTI.

Aside from detecting tract infections in dogs, a UTI test can save you a lot of time, especially if your four-legged friend gets UTIs frequently. If the test detects that your dog does have a UTI, youll want to ask your vet for effective over-the-counter treatment as soon as possible. The condition will only worsen with time.

What Are The Symptoms

It may be hard to figure out if a loved one has a UTI or not, because they may not have the classic symptoms. This is because urinary problems, such as incontinence, may have similar symptoms related to another issue, making it more difficult to recognize.

The classic, or common, symptoms of a UTI can include:

  • Burning while urinating
  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • A feeling the bladder is not completely empty
  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain

More severe symptoms of a complicated UTI can include:

Protective Power Of Dairy: Cheese And Fermented Milk Benefit Those With Utis

Dairy products are frequently associated with urinary tract infections. Dairy products, in particular cheese, may benefit people with UTIs in recent research. In a study of urinary tract infections, researchers in the Netherlands discovered that eating cheese had a protective effect against the most common types of Escherichia coli resistance. Cheese consumption may help protect against the development of resistant UTIs. Furthermore, milk-based products, such as fermented milk, are beneficial to UTI patients because they contain probiotics that help to strengthen the bodys natural defenses. Despite the fact that it may be prudent to avoid large amounts of dairy products if you have a UTI, a diet rich in dairy can be beneficial.

Probiotics, Biofilms and Interstitial Cystitis: Dr. Tim Hlavinka on UTIs, Part 2

In a recent publication in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, researchers found that women with urinary incontinence urine loss beyond ones control had different urinary microbiomes compared with continent women. The microbiomes differed not only in terms of the types of bacteria present, but also in terms of the diversity of species present. Furthermore, women who had stress urinary incontinence had different urinary microbiomes compared to women who had urgency urinary incontinence .

In a sense, these findings are not surprising given that stress and urgency urinary incontinence have different underlying causes. Stress urinary incontinence is thought to be more of an anatomic problem , while urgency urinary incontinence is thought to be more of a physiologic one .

These study findings raise the question of whether differences in the urinary microbiome play a role in causing urinary incontinence, or are a consequence of these conditions not unlike the chicken-and-egg conundrum. Further research is needed to better understand the connection.

General Remarks On Probiotics

Epidemiological evidence is an important reason to support research on alternative treatment options. There is a epidemiological evidence on significant problems with multiresistant bacteria like Clostridium difficile and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the UK and elsewhere. The development of bacterial resistance relies on several factors. One of these is the widespread use of antibiotics. Frequent use of quinolones in urology departments may contribute to the outbreaks in antibiotic associated C. difficile diarrhoea. Alternative therapeutic options should use strategies to prevent the selective development of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains, restore a balanced microbial flora and enhance the defence mechanisms of the human body. These criteria are best fulfilled by live microorganisms which are naturally hosted by the human body already. Positive and convincing effects have already been shown, e.g., in reducing complications after major abdominal surgery and acute and chronic diarrhoea. A recent report on the use of probiotics in antibiotic-associated diarrhoea underlines that this is possible already with commercially available probiotic drinks. So far, no sufficient trials have been undertaken to support the use of probiotics in patients with RUTI.

The Problem With Advil

A study out of Norway found evidence that ibuprofen can cause a whole host of complications, and could even cause the infection to last longer than normal.

| Related: Why Good Gut Bacteria Lead to Good Health? |

Almost 400 women with UTIs were given either antibiotics or ibuprofen as treatment. After monitoring their progress, scientists found that women on ibuprofen took an average of three days longer to get well than those using antibiotics, with only 39 percent of ibuprofen-users recovering by the fourth day. Of the antibiotic group, 74 percent had recovered by that same time.

Also, 12 of those on ibuprofen developed a febrile urinary tract infection on top of their pre-existing UTI. Plus, a small percent also developed an infection in the kidneys. Neither of these occurred in the group on antibiotics.

Researchers stated that it was no longer possible to recommend ibuprofen as a means of UTI treatment due to the risk of serious complications, including upper urinary tract infections.

So, what is the best option for people suffering from UTIs? If ibuprofen comes with a whole set of risks, and antibiotics are being discouraged, where can you turn for relief?

Obviously, you should always follow the advice of your doctor over something you read on the internet. However, many doctors have begun prescribing natural alternatives that may surprise you.

Relationship Between Premenopausal Uti And Probiotics

Urinary Tract Infection Treatment & Bladder Health Supplement, 60 Veg ...

Most studies on probiotic application in recurrent UTI in the literature have been performed in premenopausal women. In fact, the risk factors in premenopausal women are different from those of the postmenopausal women. These risk factors include recent sexual intercourse, use of spiral or condom containing spermicide, history of UTI, and recent antibiotic use. In a multivariate analysis, Scholes et al. reported that frequent sexual intercourse is the most important risk factor for UTI. Other risk factors can be described as factors that cause vaginal colonization of uropathogens and decrease in the number of Lactobacilli which pass through ascending route into the urinary system.

Though sufficient number of studies on the efficacy of probiotic applications containing especially Lactobacillus spp. in UTIs developed as a result of changes in the balance of vaginal flora in sexually active women have been reported in the literature, studies with postmenopausal women have not seem to be at an adequate level.
