Meningococcal Septicemia And Meningitis

Parenteral Diarrhea and Urinary Tract Infections

In rare cases, fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain have been reported as the presenting symptoms of meningococcal septicemia and meningitis 1224 h before the appearance of the rash that is typical of this disease. This might lead to misdiagnosis and a lethal outcome.29 Of 81 children studied in Ghana who survived meningitis caused by pneumococci, meningococci and H. influenzae, 15 children had mild to moderate diarrhea. All children were, however, treated for meningitis with ceftriaxone, suggesting the possibility of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.30

When Should You Have A Urine Test

You should get a urine test if you have new or worsening urinary symptoms like these:

  • Pain when urinating.
  • Blood in the urine
  • A strong urge to urinate often

You should also get a urine test if you have a fever or if a blood test suggests that you have an infection. But before you get a urine test, your doctor should make sure you dont have other symptoms, like a cough, that may be caused by something else.

If you dont have UTI symptoms, you might still need a urine test if you are scheduled to have:

  • Prostate surgery.
  • Kidney stones removed.
  • Bladder tumors removed.

What Causes A Uti

UTIs are caused by germs getting into the bladder or the kidneys. The following things can sometimes cause germs to get into the bladder or kidney:

Having bubble baths

  • Holding urine for a long time

  • Girls wiping from back to front instead of front to back after a bowel movement

  • Some children have a condition that keeps their bladder from emptying all the way. These children may have UTIs often.

    Treatment Of Diarrhea And Uti

If diarrhea and a urinary tract infection are due to a single cause then the same treatment may be prescribe for both conditions. However, this is usually not the case. Instead diarrhea and a UTI may be treated separately but at the same time. Diarrhea is usually acute and often requires little to no treatment apart from supportive measures. Bed rest, hydration and a bland diet are sufficient until the diarrhea resolves.

Antibiotics are commonly prescribed urinary tract infections as most UTIs are bacterial. Similarly antibiotics may also be helpful for diarrhea due to a bacterial infection. However, antibiotics may be the cause of diarrhea in conditions like pseudomembranous colitis, which is commonly referred to as antibotic-associated diarrhea. Probiotics may be necessary to help restore the normal intestinal flora .

The loss of fluid and electrolytes with diarrhea and excessive urination in UTIs may lead to dehydration. Proper oral hydration is therefore necessary. This includes the use of oral rehydrating solutions . However, when oral hydration is not an option then intravenous fluid administration is then required. Always consult with a doctor when diarrhea and a UTI occur for proper treatement and management. This can help prevent complications.

Risk Factors For Uti In Children

Conditions Endometriosis Is Mistaken for the Most

UTIs occur more often in girls, especially when toilet training begins. Girls are more susceptible because their urethras are shorter and closer to the anus. This makes it easier for bacteria to enter the urethra. Uncircumcised boys under 1 year old also have a slightly higher risk of UTIs.

The urethra doesnt normally harbor bacteria. But certain circumstances can make it easier for bacteria to enter or remain in your childs urinary tract. The following factors can put your child at a higher risk for a UTI:

    • a structural deformity or blockage in one of the organs of the urinary tract
    • abnormal function of the urinary tract
    • vesicoureteral reflux, a birth defect that results in the abnormal backward flow of urine
    • the use of bubbles in baths
    • tight-fitting clothes

    Prevention Methods For Women

In addition to the above prevention methods, women can also:

    • Avoid contraceptive methods that contain spermicide
    • Avoid using a diaphragm as a birth control method
    • Avoid the use of feminine products on genital regions, such as deodorant sprays and douches, which have the potential to irritate the urethra
    • Receive vaccination against certain E. coli strains

    Can Kidney Problems Cause Diarrhea

Normally, kidney stones cause symptoms such as pressure and pain in your lower back, fever, frequent urination, discomfort urinating, and bloody or discoloured urine. However, sometimes kidney stones can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and stomach discomfort.

    When To See Your Gp

See your GP if you have a fever and persistent tummy, lower back or genital pain, or if you notice a change to your usual pattern of urination.

Most kidney infections need prompt treatment with antibiotics to stop the infection from damaging the kidneys or spreading to the bloodstream. You may also need painkillers.

If youre especially vulnerable to the effects of an infection for example, if you have a pre-existing health condition or are pregnant, you may be admitted to hospital and treated with antibiotics through an intravenous drip.

After taking antibiotics, you should feel completely better after about two weeks.

In rare cases, a kidney infection can cause further problems. These include blood poisoning and a build-up of pus in the kidney called an abscess.

    Sexual Activity And Stis

Certain sexual practices may also cause both diarrhea and a UTI. For example, anal intercourse followed by vaginal intercourse can injure the rectum and then infect vagina. A UTI may then ensue due to the location of the urethral opening which is close to the vagina. Diarrhea may also occur as a result of the proctitis. Sometimes a sexually transmitted disease may cause an infection of both the rectum and vagina with a subsequent urinary tract infection. Infectious agents may also be transmitted through objects used during sexual activity.

Why The Elderly Are Vulnerable To Uti

Studies have found that as both women and men age, their chances of getting UTI increases dramatically. UTI is the most commonly diagnosed infection in long-term care facilities and they account for more than 33% of all nursing home-related infections. Elderly women become especially susceptible to UTI. 10% of women older than 65 have reported having UTI in the past 12 months, and that rate jumps to nearly 30% for women older than 85.

Seniors are more vulnerable to UTI for many reasons. The human immune system naturally weakens as it ages. Because the elderly are more prone to develop other illnesses as they grow older, their immune systems are further weakened by multiple conditions with which they struggle. So, when fungi or bacteria enter the urethra of older adults, their immune systems are less likely to fight them off and prevent infection.

In addition to their increased susceptibility to infection, older adults may experience a decreased ability to properly care for themselves. Decreases in their cognitive abilities and energy levels may result in poor hygiene and improper self-care. They may even lose their ability to communicate their care needs to their loved ones and caregivers. As a result, their care needs may go unnoticed until an infection has already taken hold.

What Is A Urinary Tract Infection In Toddlers

A UTI is an infection in your childs urinary tract which includes their kidneys, the ureters that connect them to the bladder and the urethra where urine exits their body. Bacteria get into their urinary tract through the skin around their rectum and genitals or through the bloodstream from any part of their body .

Because it may not be obvious when a child has an infection, especially if theyre too young to voice their symptoms, UTIs in children sometimes go unnoticed. Urinary tract infections need to be treated immediately to prevent the infection from spreading and damaging the kidneys.

    Treatment For Diarrhea And Utis

Usually, diarrhea and urinary tract infections occur separately. Therefore, the treatments for diarrhea and UTIs are different although certain drugs, like antibiotics, may be used for both conditions.

Acute diarrhea usually resolves on its own without medications. In acute diarrhea, one must increase fluid and salt intake to stave off dehydration. Oral rehydration solutions are a good way to prevent dehydration during diarrhea. In case a patient is not able to consume liquids, rehydration through the intravenous route is an option.

A bland diet and complete bed rest also aid recovery from diarrheal illnesses. In case of infectious diarrhea, antibiotics may be prescribed by a doctor. It is important not to practice self-medication with antibiotics since certain types of diarrhea can be caused by antibiotics. Probiotics can help in the restoration of healthy intestinal flora after a diarrheal illness.

Urinary tract infections are typically treated with prescription antibiotics. Dehydration is also a possibility in some cases of urinary tract infections because of fluid loss through frequent urination. Therefore, oral rehydration solutions may be useful in urinary tract infections as well.

In cases where both diarrhea and urinary tract infections occur due to the same cause, a single treatment regimen may be used to treat both conditions simultaneously.

Uncommon Symptoms Of A Urinary Tract Infection You Should Know

Can Constipation Cause A Urinary Tract Infection?

About 40% of women develop at least one urinary tract infection in their lifetime. Having one UTI over the span of decades doesnt sound too bad, but not all women are that lucky.

Its estimated that 20-30% of women will have a second UTI within 3-4 months. And for 11% of women, UTIs become an ongoing problem, recurring at least once every year and often more frequently.

UTIs typically cause a specific cluster of symptoms: a strong need to urinate, frequent urination, burning when you urinate, and passing small amounts of urine. Women receive comprehensive care for UTIs at Fred A. Williams, MD, so call the office in Paris, Texas, if you experience any of those symptoms.

    Condom Use During Sex

Non-lubricated latex condoms may increase friction and irritate the skin during sexual intercourse. This may increase the risk of a UTI.

However, there are many reasons to use condoms. Theyre important for reducing the spread of sexually transmitted infections and preventing unwanted pregnancy.

To help prevent friction and skin irritation from condoms, be sure to use enough water-based lubricant during sex.

Avoid using condoms that have been coated with spermicide.

Diverticular Disease And Urinary Tract Infections Link

    dan71214

I was recently diagnosed with Diverticular disease which happened incidentally as i was having a CT scan for suspected kidney stones. Soon after the scan i had really bad bloating, cramping pains down my left flank which radiated to the right and my abdomen, high temperature , very fast heart rate and generally feeling awful and unable to eat for a week. I was being investigated for a urinary tract infection of which i have had several this year . Apparently this is very unusual as i am male and relatively young < 40 and otherwise healthy. Given the severity of my symptoms i was admitted to hospital where i was on 3 IV antibiotics and a drip for 3 days followed by a week of amoxicillin. Thank goodness the antibiotics did the trick as dr was worried i was sliding into a sepsis situation.

What i am wondering is if there is a link between the diverticular disease and the urinary tract infection. It seems logical to me that given how close the bowel and bladder are to each other one could cause the other. Has anyone had a similar experience and/or any tips? It has been a month since my hospital admission and i am keeping my diet very strict and so far have had no big issues with my bowel and my urine seems clear so far.

    thanks for your tips
