The sphincter squeezes the urethra to keep urine in the bladder until it is time to urinate. An AUS device has a balloon reservoir, a cuff, and a pump. When the AUS is turned on, liquid inside the balloon flows into the cuff. When the cuff is filled, it squeezes your urethra to prevent urine from leaking out of your bladder. To urinate, you press the pump. This relaxes the cuff and allows urine to flow out of your bladder.

Stress Incontinence Treatment Options
Kegels Exercises. These exercises strengthen your urinary sphincter and pelvic floor muscles the muscles that help control urination. To do pelvic floor muscle exercises, imagine that youre trying to stop your urine flow. Squeeze the muscles you would use and hold for a count of 10. Relax, count to 10 again, then repeat. You can do these exercises almost anywhere while youre driving, watching television or sitting at your desk at work.
Biofeedback. Sometimes we will recommend that you perform the pelvic floor muscles exercises with a trained medical professional. The patient is taught how to properly perform the exercises. The patients will also receive feedback on how the muscles are strengthening. In addition to active exercises the muscles are strengthened passively through electrical stimulation. Biofeedback improves patient compliance and offers audio and visual feedback.
Medications. Currently there are NO FDA approved medications for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence.

Kegel exercises are a simple way to build strength in your pelvic floor muscles. These exercises are done by lifting, holding and then relaxing your pelvic floor muscles. You can find these muscles by stopping the flow of urine mid-stream while youre urinating. Only do this until you learn how to find the muscles stopping the flow of urine mid-stream isnt healthy over a long period of time.
When youre doing Kegel exercises, start small. Only hold it for a few second. Over time you can slowly work your way up to longer and longer stretches of holding the muscles tight.
Unlike other types of workouts, no one can tell when youre doing Kegel exercises. Aim to do several sets of Kegel exercises twice a day.

The pelvic floor muscles are responsible for supporting the bladder, and they help control the flow of urine through the urethra. When they become weakened or damaged, it can cause stress incontinence.
Performing pelvic floor exercises including Kegels, squats, and the bridge can help strengthen the muscles around and within the bladder to prevent urinary incontinence.
According to the results of two clinical trials , women who participate in pelvic floor muscle training are twice as likely to see an improvement in their urinary incontinence than those receiving symptomatic care alone. They are also five times more likely to have their symptoms completely resolve.
Those who have had recent surgery, have given birth recently, or have other health concerns should talk with a doctor before beginning any exercise regimen.
Drink Enough Fluids To Keep Your Bladder Happy
Drinking less water and other fluids to decrease your risk of an accident is not a good idea, says Tomas Griebling, MD, a professor of urology at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City and president of the Geriatric Urological Society of the American Urological Association. While its true that chugging down a lot of fluids especially in a short amount of time can lead to leaks, not drinking enough can also make you need to pee suddenly.
When you dont drink enough water, the urine becomes more concentrated and that can be irritating to the bladder and increase urgency, explains Dr. Griebling.
How much fluid is enough varies from person to person, but the National Association for Continence estimates that six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day is about the right amount. Checking the color of your urine can help you know if youre on target, according to Harvard Health. In general, a pale yellow color means youre adequately hydrated, while a darker yellow suggests you need to drink more.

A health care professional, such as a physical therapist trained in pelvic floor therapy, can help you get the most out of your Kegel exercises by helping you improve your core muscle strength. Your core includes your torso muscles, especially the lower back, pelvic floor muscles, and abdomen. These muscles keep your pelvis lined up with your spine, which helps with good posture and balance. Your physical therapist can show you how to do some exercises during daily activities, such as riding in a car or sitting at a desk.
You dont need special equipment for Kegel exercises. However, if you are unsure whether you are doing the exercises correctly, you can learn how to perform Kegel exercises properly by using biofeedback, electrical stimulation, or both. Biofeedback uses special sensors to measure muscle contractions that control urination.

How Long Will It Take Me To Get Back To My Daily Activities
This depends on the procedure performed. The doctor may remove the catheter right after the procedure or a couple of days after surgery. You can usually leave the hospital two or three days after implantation of an artificial urinary sphincter. You may need to stay in the hospital longer if you cannot urinate or your bladder does not empty itself completely, or if you have problems in the wound area such as an infection. The recommended length of hospital stay varies in different countries.
After you leave the hospital, your body still needs time to fully recover from surgery. Because of this, the AUS will not be activated until your lower urinary tract has completely healed. This means that in the weeks after the procedure you will continue to have urine leakage. During this time you may also experience pain in the pelvic area, or feel pain when you urinate. Your doctor can prescribe medication to deal with these symptoms.
The doctor will schedule an appointment to activate the device 4-6 weeks after surgery. Your wound will be checked as well. Usually, stitches that dissolve and disappear are used.
