The Four Major Types Of Urinary Incontinence

How to buy Pads or Diapers for BLADDER LEAKAGE?! | Options for SEVERE urinary incontinence

Stress Incontinence: This type of urine leakage occurs while coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, lifting heavy objects, or doing anything that puts pressure on the bladder.

Urgency or Urge Incontinence: Described as the inability to hold urine long enough to reach a restroom, urgency incontinence can be associated with more frequent urination. It may be an indication that a separate disease or condition is present. Urinary Tract Infections are a common cause of frequent urination and are often easily treated. Always consult with a doctor to find out if there is a reason why you feel the need to urinate more frequently than usual.

Functional Incontinence: Urine leakage that is a result of an inability to reach a restroom in time because of a mobility issue is described as functional incontinence. This type of incontinence may happen because of an injury, arthritis, or any other condition that inhibits movement.

Overflow Incontinence: Overflow incontinence occurs when the volume of urine produced exceeds the bladders capacity to hold it, and it too can be a result of an underlying condition that you should discuss with your doctor.

Choosing Your Product Style

Pads and liners come in a variety of shapes and sizes. That makes it easier to find the right fit for your body shape and lifestyle.

Liners are generally wider and longer than pads and offer better “front-to-back” protection. Pads are usually curved. They’re disposable and designed for women and men. Adhesive strips hold them inside your underwear. They trap 8 or more ounces of urine and keep it away from your skin. They also block odor and can be changed throughout the day. Many contain elastic on the sides to cradle your body and help keep leaks from rolling over the edge.

There’s also a range of disposable undergarments with built-in protection — not just in the crotch, but throughout the entire garment. Styles range from pull-ons with elasticized legs and waists resembling a traditional cloth panty to underwear that slips on with Velcro or adhesive tabs for a customized fit. You can also find open-sided “thong style” panties held together by straps in the front and back that rest on top of the hip bone. They are reusable, washable, and typically available in a range of colors. You can get day styles as well as overnight ones, which are designed to hold more urine. Like pads, this underwear is designed to be absorbent, to keep moisture from your skin, and to control odor.

Condom catheters fit around the penis. They end in a tube that leads to a collection bag strapped to your body.

What Are Kegel Exercises

Kegel exercises, also called Kegels or pelvic floor muscle training, are exercises for your pelvic floor muscles to help prevent or reduce stress urinary incontinence. Your pelvic floor muscles support your uterus, bladder, small intestine, and rectum.

Four in 10 women improved their symptoms after trying Kegels.9 Kegels can be done daily and may be especially helpful during pregnancy. They can help prevent the weakening of pelvic floor muscles, which often happens during pregnancy and childbirth. Your pelvic floor muscles may also weaken with age and less physical activity.

Some women have urinary symptoms because the pelvic floor muscles are always tightened. In this situation, Kegel exercises will not help your urinary symptoms and may cause more problems. Talk to your doctor or nurse about your urinary symptoms before doing Kegel exercises.

How Is Incontinence Treated

Adult Incontinence Products For Women

A treatment plan should be determined only after consultation with your doctor. They will take your age, health, and medical history into consideration and discuss possible treatments based on your tolerance for different kinds of medications and the various therapies available.

Incontinence can be treated in many different ways, including dietary changes, behavioral therapies, medicine regimens, pelvic muscle re-education, in-office procedures, and surgery.

Dietary Changes: Your doctor may recommend eliminating bladder irritants, such as alcohol, caffeine, and citrus fruits.

Behavioral Therapies: Common therapies include bladder training and toileting assistance. Bladder training techniques teach you how to resist the urge to urinate and gradually lengthen the duration between urinating. Toileting assistance uses schedules and habits to prompt you to urinate regularly, thus preventing leakage.

Medicine Regiments: Your doctor may prescribe anticholinergic medications. These work by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a type of neurotransmitter. Blocking acetylcholine inhibits involuntary muscle movements, and may be prescribed for overactive bladder and incontinence. Be sure to discuss the side effects, particularly for elderly patients. Vaginal estrogen may also be considered to help ease stress incontinence in particular.

What Increases Your Risk

Sometimes several things combine to cause urinary incontinence. For example, a woman may have had multiple childbirths, be older, and have a severe cough because of chronic bronchitis or smoking. All of these might contribute to her incontinence problem.

Physical conditions that make urinary incontinence more likely include:

  • Pregnancy and vaginal delivery.

Medicines and foods that may make urinary incontinence worse include:

  • Caffeinated and carbonated drinks, such as coffee, tea, and soda pop.
  • Alcohol drinks.
  • Prescription medicines that increase urine production or relax the bladder .

Meet Elitone Fda Medical Device For Stress Urinary Incontinence

I was thrilled when I learned that there was a comfortable, easy to use device that allows you o take control of this sensitive health issue in the comfort of your own home. This device doesnt require a prescription so you dont have to worry about an uncomfortable conversation/ // with your doctor about urinary incontinence. Elitone is the first FDA cleared medical device to relieve mild to moderate symptoms of urinary incontinence. Left untreated, urinary incontinence can become debilitating.

Before Elitone, most women relied on Kegals or other devices that have to be inserted into the vagina. Elitone was created to be worn under your clothes placed gently against the skin. Then the device works by applying low-intensity stimulation to your pelvic floor muscles. This device isnt inserted into the vagina and is non-evasive.

Elitone GelPads can be used 2 to 3 times if they are carefully placed back into the sealable pouch before they need to be replaced. Simply replace the gel pad if you notice that it isnt sticking to the skin properly or you no longer feel the same intensity of contractions during the previous session. How To Do Them

Stand, sit or lie down with your knees slightly apart. Relax.

Find your pelvic muscle. Imagine that you are trying to hold back urine or a bowel movement. Squeeze the muscles you would use to do that. DO NOT tighten your stomach or buttocks.

Women: to make sure youve got the right muscle, insert your finger into your vagina while you do the exercise. You should feel a tightening around your finger.

Men: when you tighten the pelvic floor muscle, your penis will twitch and contract in towards your body.

  • Tighten the muscles for 5 to 10 seconds. Make sure you keep breathing normally
  • Now relax the muscles for about 10 seconds
  • Repeat 1220 times, three to five times a day

Stick to it! You should begin to see results after a few weeks. Like any other muscle in your body, your pelvic muscles will only stay strong as long as you exercise them regularly.

If youre having a hard time doing Kegel exercises, your healthcare professional can teach you how to do them correctly. He/she may even suggest a tool or device to help make sure youre using the right muscles .

Your doctor may also suggest biofeedback, a training technique thats used to monitor the contraction of the pelvic floor muscles as you do your Kegel exercises. Biofeedback uses a machine that records the contractions of your muscles and translates the movement into a visual signal that you can watch on a monitor. Some people find this helpful in learning how to do Kegel exercises correctly.
