How Do You Give A Urine Sample

Urine can easily be contaminated by , cells and other substances so it is a good idea to cleanse the genital area with water but not soap before giving a sample. To get an accurate result and avoid bacterial contamination, clean midstream urine is used. You take a sample of midstream urine by interrupting the flow of urine after a few seconds and then collecting this middle portion of the urine in a cup. Your doctor will let you know if there is anything else you should pay attention to for your specific test.

How Might It Work

Scientists used to think that cranberries protected against UTIs by making urine more acidic, which is less friendly to bacteria like Escherichia coli that are usually to blame.

But now, researchers have a different theory: that cranberries make it harder for infection-causing bacteria to stick to the urinary tract walls.

It could be that nutrients in cranberries change the bacteria so that they cant stick to the urinary tract. Or it may be that cranberries create a slippery coating on the urinary tract walls that makes it hard for E. coli to get a good grip.

Yes, an antibiotic will kill the gross bacteria and hopefully cure the infection. However, the antibiotic wont immediately stop the pain and discomfort.

To make the pain less intrusive, you can buy an over-the-counter medication that numbs the bladder. These pills usually make your urine look dark yellow or orange and they may leave a not-so-great stain in undergarments while the stain should come out, if youre worried, just wear an unloved pair or use a pad!

In order to measure the amount of sugar in your urine, you need a urine test strip and a container for collecting urine. It is important to talk with your doctor about the best time of day to perform the urine glucose test, and whether to do it before or after eating. Glucose in the urine could indicate diabetes or renal glycosuria. Having sugar in your urine is usually a sign of very high blood sugar levels. The extra sugar in the bloodstream is usually only removed via the kidneys and detectable in urine at blood sugar concentrations of 10 mmol/L and above. Normally the amount of sugar in urine is too low to be detected. Any detection of sugar on this test usually calls for follow-up testing for diabetes. Blood sugar levels can be measured a lot more accurately by taking a blood sample and having it tested in a laboratory. NOTE: These last two parameters are commonly used to screen for possible metabolic disorders.

How To Use UTI Test Strips

At home tests are a great way to detect a UTI before going to see your doctor. Some, like AZO Test Strips®, are the same urinary tract infection tests used in many doctors offices. The most reliable, over-the-counter UTI home test available, AZO Test Strips®offer two UTI tests in one including both Leukocyte and Nitrite tests. These tests performed together are more effective for detecting a UTI than testing for nitrite alone.

If you get a positive result, its time to call your doctor with the results. If your result is negative but you are experiencing symptoms, you should still call your doctor. A small number of people may not have detectable nitrites even though an infection is present.

Urinary tract infections account for approximately 8.3 million doctor visits each year.1 Approximately 7 million episodes of acute uncomplicated UTI occur annually in the United States.2 It is estimated that at least 20% of women can expect to have a symptomatic UTI in their lifetime, occurring a majority of the time in women who are between 20 and 56 years of age. Women are more prone to infection than men primarily because women have a shorter urethra.3 In fact, one in every five women who contract a UTI will eventually have another. Further, women acquire three or more UTIs a year more than men. Repeat infections are commonly seen in patients with diabetes or those who have difficulty upon urination, such as patients with urinary incontinence and benign prostatic hypertrophy.4

Which Antibiotic Will Work Best

Your doctor will take a urine sample to confirm that you have a UTI. Then the lab will grow the germs in a dish for a couple of days to find out which type of bacteria you have. This is called a culture. Itâll tell your doctor what type of germs caused your infection. Theyâll likely prescribe one of the following antibiotics to treat it before the culture comes back:

Which medication and dose you get depends on whether your infection is complicated or uncomplicated.

âUncomplicatedâ means your urinary tract is normal. âComplicatedâ means you have a disease or problem with your urinary tract. You could have a narrowing of your ureters, which are the tubes that carry urine from your kidneys to your bladder, a narrowing in the urethra which transports urine from the bladder out of the body, or, you might have a blockage like a kidney stone or an enlarged prostate . Its also possible you have a urinary fistula or a bladder diverticulum.

To treat a complicated infection, your doctor might prescribe a higher dose of antibiotics. If your UTI is severe or the infection is in your kidneys, you might need to be treated in a hospital or doctors office with high-dose antibiotics you get through an IV.

Your doctor will also consider these factors when choosing an antibiotic:

  • Are you over age 65?
  • Are you allergic to any antibiotics?
  • Have you had any side effects from antibiotics in the past?

Next Generation Sequencing: Pcr And 16s Technology

PCR and 16s technology use DNA sequencing to isolate and identify specific fragments of microbial DNA present in a human sample. One company that provides this type of service is MicroGenDX, a US based molecular laboratory.

Patients can order a UTI testing kit online, collect a urine sample at home, then ship it back. Practitioners can order testing kits on behalf of patients online as well.

MicroGenDX states that their tests identify 100% of the known bacteria, fungi and parasites in a urine sample from a database of > 50,000 species, with 99.9% accuracy.

We strongly believe MicroGenDX Laboratory can provide better diagnostic information to treat chronic UTIs by utilizing Next-Gen Sequencing. NGS takes the guesswork out of microbial detection allowing for targeted utilization of antimicrobials.”

Testing kits are available for both men and women. Weve covered the UTI testing service offered by MicroGenDX in much more detail in a dedicated article. Click the above link to read more.

How To Test For A Uti

Our UTI test detects a UTI by measuring the levels of leukocytes and nitrite in your urine. The higher the detection levels of leukocytes and nitrite, the more likely you are to have a UTI. To take the UTI test, follow the instructions below.uti-tests

  • Feel free to use the pH balanced wipe over your urethra . Remember the golden rule wipe front to back!
  • Unwrap the test, hold it by the thumb grip, and place it in your urine stream for 1-2 seconds. Make sure that both the top and bottom test pads are damp.
  • Set the test on a flat surface, facing up, and wait one minute. At the one minute mark, hold the nitrite test result up to the color chart and compare your result.
  • Wait one more minute. At the two-minute mark, compare your leukocytes test result to the color chart.
  • Make sure to record your results! We suggest taking a picture of your test next to the color chart for future reference.
  • What Does The Test Measure

How To Use UTI Test Strips – Are Urinalysis Test Strips Accurate?

At-home UTI tests check for two substances in the urine: leukocytes and nitrites.

    • Leukocytes: Leukocytes are a type of white blood cell . Tests may assess WBC levels by measuring an enzyme called leukocyte esterase that is released by WBCs when they are present in the urine. Detecting leukocyte esterase in the urine is a sign of inflammation that is most often related to a urinary tract infection.
    • Nitrites: Nitrites are substances that may be created in the urine when significant numbers of bacteria enter the urinary tract. Although most bacteria that cause UTIs produce nitrites in the urine, some less common microbes do not.

While finding these substances in the urine suggests a UTI in certain patients, testing for them may be misleading in people without symptoms. This is because leukocytes and nitrites may be present in the urine of people without a UTI or in people with other conditions.

Cranberry Juice: The Perfect Uti Cocktail Cure

Many women turn to cranberry juice when they have a UTI or pain that they associate with a UTI. Some women believe that cranberry juice also can keep a UTI from occurring.

Is there any truth to the berry-tastic bacteria-fighting power of the cranberry?

While the cranberry does in fact have the ability to keep e-coli from wreaking havoc in the bladder, the juice of this fruit isnt a magic cure. As noted in the journal article Cranberry and urinary tract infections, in light of the heterogeneity of clinical study designs and the lack of consensus regarding the dosage regimen and formulation to use, cranberry products cannot be recommended for the prophylaxis of recurrent UTIs at this time.

That being said, drinking cranberry juice can keep you hydrated, and we always need to stay hydrated. However, if you loathe the taste of that sour juice, you dont have to pucker up in the name of a healthy bladder. Drink water instead!

How Accurate Are Home Urinary Tract Infection Tests

Our tests are clinically tested at detecting common forms of UTIs. Remember, only a full urinalysis can detect every type of UTI. So if you have symptoms , please contact your primary care provider for assessment and treatment. You may get inaccurate results if:

      • Youre dehydrated or so overly-hydrated that your urine is diluted.
      • You experience color blindness . Have someone check your results with you!
      • You are already taking any kind of antibiotic.
      • Your urine has a ph> 8, AKA youre experiencing kidney stones, severe vomiting, blood in your urine, or other factors that are altering your urine in major ways. In those cases, this test is not for you, but please talk to your primary care provider and take care.
      • Youve been taking medications or supplements that alter your urine color, such as drugs containing azo dyes , nitrofurantoin , riboflavin.
      • Your UTI is caused by a bacteria that is not detectable by nitrite levels this happens in a small number of cases and requires visiting your primary care provider.
