Most of us know juice is a healthier drink than sugary soda.
But not all juices are created equal.
Health magazine is reporting on a UCLA study listing the ten healthiest fruit juices.
On The Early Show Saturday, Health magazine contributor and clinical nutritionist Samantha Heller talked about what makes the juices healthy.
The study took into account the antioxidant levels of the juices.
Basically, Heller says, anything with a vivid color, like most berries, will be high in antioxidants, so it’s no surprise berry juices landed in most of the top 10 slots.
Oxidants, she explains, are naturally-occurring substances that derive from oxygen. Chemically speaking, oxygen always wants to “mate,” and if it can’t find a mate, it will latch onto anything. As it’s latching onto substances in our body, it can overwhelm them, and cause disease.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, voluntarily bond with molecules of oxygen, preventing them from glomming onto any other substance in our body, and that helps keep us healthy.
And these juices have high levels of antioxidants.
Still, Heller cautions that doesn’t mean you should go overboard with any of them.
There’s always the danger, she points out, that when we tell people something is healthy for them, they’ll go out and drink it by the gallon.
Also, bear in mind that juices sometimes interact with medications in an undesirable way. For example, grapefruit juice interacts with some medications, so you have to be careful.
Study Reveals Pomegranate Juice Effective In Fighting Bacteria
NEW YORK — Recent preliminary research by Milton Schiffenbauer, PhD, a biology professor at PaceUniversity in New York, indicates that 100 percent pomegranate juice and POMx liquid extract , made from the Wonderful variety of pomegranate grown in California, have antiviral and antibiotic effects. His findings were introduced May 22 at the American Society for Microbiologys annual meeting in Toronto in a presentation titled, The Inactivation of Virus and Destruction of Bacteria by Pomegranate Juice.
In this exploratory study, Schiffenbauer tested 100 percent pomegranate juice and POMx liquid extract and the effect each had on a bacterial virus T1 and several bacteria over various periods of time, in various conditions and with the addition of other ingredients. The titer of T1 virus which infects E.coli B decreased up to 100 percent within 10 minutes of the addition of 100 percent pomegranate juice or POMx liquid extract. The research was funded by PaceUniversity and POM Wonderful LLC, and was conducted using POM Wonderful pomegranate products.
The addition of the POM products to various oral agents, including toothpaste and mouthwash, gave these agents an antimicrobial effect.
This work comes on the heels of earlier studies conducted by Schiffenbauer that found that white tea and green tea extracts also have antimicrobial effects. According to Schiffenbauer, pomegranate has achieved even better results than the teas.

Pomegranate skin preparations hold promise in increasing the rate of wound healing. Pomegranate peel prepared as an ointment was applied to guinea pig wounds daily for 12 days . The treatment significantly enhanced wound healing by increasing collagen, DNA and protein synthesis as well as contraction rate and tensile strength. The extract exhibited significant antibacterial activity against wound bacteria, including strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, S. aureus, E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae , Salmonella Anatum, S. Typhimurium, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. There were no toxic effects noted from use of the skin ointment. Another study using the methanolic extract of pomegranate peels formulated into a 10% water-soluble gel showed similar enhancements in wound healing in a Wistar rat model compared to a commercial topical antibacterial product . The group treated with 5.0% gel had a 59.5% increase in contraction of the skin, a 2-fold increase in collagen content, and positive microscopic changes to the skin. Participant’s wounds were completely healed after 10 days, compared to 1618 days for the group receiving a blank control gel. The activity was postulated to be due to the high phenolic content in the peel extract.
Best Juice For Kidney Disease
