Young Living Thyme Essential Oil

Essential Oils for Urinary Tract Infection

We cannot forget to mention the essential oil of thyme. It is another of the plant extracts that are able to completely eliminate bacteria. It will take care of all the germs you have in the urinary area. At the same time it will help reduce pain. That way, it will be much easier to treat the infection.

Why Use Essential Oils

Essential oils are liquid plant extracts that come from leaves, flowers, roots, and fruit rinds. Each of the oils has a different chemical make-up and scent that gives it therapeutic abilities. People use essential oils for UTI for a number of reasons, including the fact that they can strengthen the immune system, reduce fluid retention, have antibacterial properties, and can help rid the body of toxins.

Is Diffusing Essential Oils Around Cats Safe

Welcome to the community, Dr. Bahr! Many of my friends are posting on Facebook a warning about diffusing essential oils around cats. Is this really a concern? I have been using them but want to know if I should stop.

Im so glad you asked about essential oils and cats and the answer to your question is YES, I have some concerns. However, they may not be exactly the same ones you have been hearing about. My concerns are more general in nature and deal with all of the smells cats living in four walls are exposed to.

Cats are born without sight or sound and manipulate the first few weeks of life almost completely by smell. Scent is an essential component of their existence. The importance of smell to a cat cannot be emphasized enough. Now imagine what it must be like for our feline companions to live within four walls devoid of fresh air. Our cats smell only those scents we place in our homes. Instead of smelling grass, soil, garbage, and other wonderful natural elements, our kitties deal with the smell of cleaning supplies, the food we cook, things we put on our skin and bodies, or scent that we spray and burn. My two most recent blogs at discuss the importance of smell and ways to use scent as enrichment for indoor cats to enjoy. I urge all owners to become more aware of the effects all of the products they use in their home and on their bodies have on their cats that live indoors.

How To Deal With Recurring Upper Respiratory Infections

I have a 8 year old cat that was a stray. He has been a great cat. About a year and a half ago he started having issues with URIs. He will get antibiotics and they go away while he is on the medication but about 2 weeks after it is done he starts back up again. He responds well the the antibiotics and is back to his old self every time after taking them. Could this be allergies causing this since it just suddenly came on after he was fine for 6.5 years? We have moved in that time and I did switch out the cat food because the old one was upsetting my other cats stomach. I am at a loss and the vet doesnt seem to know what to do with him either. He cant keep taking antibiotics all the time. He shakes his head from time to time also. It is obviously bacterial since he responds to the antibiotics so could something be trapping that in his nose and then it turns to a bacterial infection? So confused what to do with him to help him.

Hi Connie,

Believe it or not, cats with chronic respiratory diseases are common and indeed frustrating to manage. It negatively impacts everyones life. Patients remain uncomfortable and owners remain distraught. It is frustrating for veterinarians who have little more than antibiotics to dispense. This is not a condition anyone enjoys dealing with. However, many of the underlying causes can, in fact, be treated successfully while others can only be managed.

Determination Of Minimal Inhibitory And Bactericidal Concentrations

MIC/MBC determinations were performed according to the CLSI- and EUCAST-Standards. Broth microdilution assay was used for determination of the MIC in artificial urine . Essential oils were first diluted in absolute ethanol and afterwards added to AU in the 96-well plate with a starting concentration of approximately 50 mg/mL . Afterwards, 2-fold serial dilutions in AU were performed. The MIC was defined as the lowest concentration inhibiting visible growth after incubation at 37 °C for 20 ± 2 h. For determination of MBCs, in a second step, 3 µL of each well of the cultured plate were transferred onto CAMHB agar supplemented with 5% blood using a one-time inoculator . The plates were incubated overnight at 37 °C. The number of colonies subsequently grown was used to determine the bactericidal endpoint. MBC was defined as a > 99.9% reduction of the initially inoculated colony counts. MIC/MBC determinations were performed thrice.

Aromatherapy When Youre Battling An Active Uti

If you have an active infection and are working with your physician to combat it, aromatherapy can assist these medical efforts, Chesla says.

You can continue using the same blend as you use for prevention, but add a few extra drops of cedarwood. Tea tree oil can also battle bacteria, so you can substitute this for the cedarwood if you desire. Youll need to source this oil extremely carefully, though, because so much of what is sold as tea tree oil is actually synthetic, Chesla says.

Chesla also recommends supporting your painful abdomen by massing it with a blend of equal parts clary sage , geranium , and lavender , again mixed into a carrier oil. Clary sage can have anti-spasmodic effects, while the others are said to induce calm.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Urinary Tract Infection

UTIs are easily and commonly overlooked and mistaken for other conditions in adults. There can be absolutely no signs or symptoms of a UTI, or even just mild symptoms. The most common symptoms are:

  • Experiencing a burning sensation or pain when urinating
  • Having urine that smells strongly
  • Having urine that seems to look bright pink, red, or soda-colored- this is a sign of blood in the urine
  • Having urine that seems cloudy
  • Strong, persistent urges to urinate
  • Frequent urinations with small amounts of urine
  • Pain around the center of the pelvis and near the pubic bone.

While those are the more generalized symptoms, each type of UTI can have its own more-specific symptoms it just depends on which part of the urinary system is affected. Symptoms that are more specific for each area of the urinary tract include:

  • Bladder: painful/frequent urination, discomfort in the lower abdomen, pressure in the pelvis, and blood in the urine
  • Urethra: discharge and burning while urinating
  • Kidneys: nausea/vomiting, fever, shaking/chills, and upper back/side pain

Women seem to be more at risk for UTIs than men because the bacteria in female anatomy can spread easily. Women also have a shorter urethra than men, which means the bacteria have a shorter distance to travel to get to the bladder. Other factors that make women more at-risk for a UTI is sexual activity, using certain types of birth control , and experiencing hormonal/menopausal changes.

Other Treatments For Utis

Doctors traditionally treat UTIs with an oral antibiotic. Although antibiotics can be effective in killing off the bacteria that cause a UTI, they can also cause complications. They can help create drug-resistant bacteria and kill off the good bacteria in the body, too. This may lead to yeast infections.

You have may have heard the common advice that cranberry juice can help treat and prevent UTIs. show cranberry extract reduces the incidence of UTIs.

Other studies have looked at the effect of cranberry juice on UTIs. One 2018 study found that taking cranberry for one year reduced the incidence of recurrent UTIs in women.

Researchers cant seem to agree if the juice really works or not. The bottom line is that cranberry juice might help with UTIs and, unless youre on a low-sugar diet, is worth a try. Most doctors also suggest following these basic tips to prevent recurring UTIs.

Diet For Cat With Allergies And Urinary Crystals

I have a cat that is on limited diet because of allergies and should be on Royal canin So diet because of crystals. What can I feed her to address both of her problems. Thanks for any ideas you may have.

Hi Darlene,

When faced with a feeding dilemma like yours, I typically rely on a nutritional consultation with a specialist first. The American College of Veterinary Nutrition has some excellent information on their website at with resources for pet owners like you.

With so many food options, I am confident you and your veterinarian will find several that address both of your cats conditions successfully. Remember, no one food is for life and your cats nutrition should be revisited often. Age, health, and weight are all factors that must be considered and because they change from time to time, so does the proper diet. Having a professional on board who you trust makes the process easier and I hope you have good luck finding the right one for you and your kitty.

Look For Companies That Test Essential Oil Quality

The best companies hire an independent third party to test each batch of oil as it is made. The tests they perform are called gas chromatographymass spectrometry reports. They show how much of each bioactive compound is present in the oil.

Also, because oils can degrade over time, good manufacturers also print an expiration date on the label, Chesla says.

The results of these tests should be made available to you, either on the companys website or sent to you if you phone and ask. Chesla recommends that you take the report to your doctor, who should recognize the chemical components. That way if there are any concerns with interactions with other medicines you might be taking, your doctor will be informed.

Please contact me if you would like more detailed information or to set up an appointment to visit with you and your pet. You can also visit my Young Living Essential Oils website for additional information on essential oils.

Essential oils, known as natures living energy, are the natural, aromatic volatile liquids found in shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. The distinctive components in essential oils defend plants against insects, environmental conditions, and disease. They are also vital for a plant to grow, live, evolve, and adapt to its surroundings. Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plant sources via steam distillation, and are highly concentrated and far more potent than dry herbs.

While essential oils often have a pleasant aroma, their chemical makeup is complex and their benefits vastwhich makes them much more than something that simply smells good.

At The First Hint Of Infection

This is sort of Phase One of this bladder infection home remedy regimen:

  • Massive increase of fluids: I generally double my water the first day or two to help flush my system clean. Be sure your water is clean and filtered

  • Increasing probiotics: I increase the brands I use by 25-50% depending on what I feel I need and the intensity of my symptoms.

  • Cranberry Supplements: They can be hard to find in stores, but are worth the effort to order and have on hand. I suggest researching your brand choice well to ensure high quality and at least 1,000 mg per capsule. I start with two capsules 3x a day until I know if the infection is for sure.

If it never passes the “hint stage” I keep at this routine for a full week, just to be sure. If my symptoms of an infection increase, I step up my bladder infection home remedy a notch with the following regime.
