Best Foods To Prevent Utis

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)| Urine infection| Home Remedies| Natural Remedies| Explained

Many people think that a urinary tract infection is just an infection of the bladder or urethra. If left untreated, it can evolve into something truly life-threatening, like kidney failure. UTIs are generally caused by the E. coli bacteria that enter the urinary tract and spread to the bladder. While women are more susceptible to UTIs, men can also get this nasty infection. Symptoms of a urinary tract infection include urgency to urinate, frequent urination, bloody/cloudy urine with a foul odor, and pain/burning while urinating. If you have any of these symptoms, as well as a fever or nausea, that could mean the infection has reached your kidneys. The good news is, you can take certain steps to ensure you dont get a UTI. Eating some foods can drastically lower your chances of getting one. Read to find out what are the best foods to prevent UTIs.

Drink Plenty Of Fluids

Dehydration is linked to an increased risk of UTIs.

This is because regular urination can help flush bacteria from the urinary tract to prevent infection. When youre dehydrated, you arent urinating as often, which can create a breeding ground for bacteria.

A examined nursing home residents and administered a drinking schedule to participants to increase their fluid intake. Following the schedule decreased UTIs requiring antibiotics by 56%.

In a 2020 randomized control trial , 140 premenopausal participants prone to UTIs took part in a 12-month study to test if a higher fluid intake would decrease their risk of recurrent cystitis and, in turn, their risk of developing a UTI. Researchers found that an increase in fluid intake led to a decrease in UTI frequency.

To stay hydrated and meet your fluid needs, its best to drink water throughout the day and always when youre thirsty.

Benefits of drinking more fluids for UTI

Drinking plenty of liquids can decrease your risk of UTIs by making you pee more, which helps remove bacteria from your urinary tract.

evidence suggests that increasing your intake of vitamin C could protect against UTIs.

Vitamin C is thought to work by increasing the acidity of urine, killing off the bacteria that cause infection.

An older 2007 study of UTIs in pregnant women looked at the effects of taking 100 milligrams of vitamin C every day.

Fruits and vegetables are especially high in vitamin C and are a good way to increase your intake.

Study Population And Design

The subjects were recruited between 1993 and 1997 at 2 centers: the Finnish Student Health Service at the University of Oulu and the occupational health center for the staff of Oulu University Hospital. The cases were women who had had acute symptomatic UTI caused by Escherichia coli . The women entered the study within 2 wk of the culture-confirmed UTI episode. Subjects were excluded from the study if they received long-term antimicrobial prophylaxis at the time of the index UTI. The controls were selected from lists of all female students and hospital workers from the corresponding center of the case invitations were sent to the next 2 women on the alphabetical list who were born in the same year as the case. The control was accepted if she had not experienced a UTI and had not taken any antimicrobial prophylaxis during the past 5 y. If neither of the controls replied within 2 wk or both of those chosen had to be excluded, 2 more controls were selected, up to 6 per case, so that at least one acceptable control was available for each case. There were a total of 139 case-control pairs, with a mean age of 30.5 ± 10.5 y 45 cases had an additional control and 1 had 2 additional controls . One hundred nine of the cases had had more than one UTI episode. The protocol was evaluated by the Ethical Committee of the Medical Faculty of the University of Oulu and was found to be ethically acceptable.
