Spermicide use is a very strong risk factor for UTIs, especially when used with a diaphragm. Spermicides alter the natural bacteria balance in the vagina and increase the chance that other more hostile bacteria can settle in. Just an FYI: Sexual intercourse is one of the strongest risk factors for UTIs. Reducing the frequency of intercourse or intermittent abstinence may be beneficial for some people, but thats for you to decide!

Get The Right Treatment

If you think you have a UTI, don’t ignore it and hope it will go away. Go to your GP. An untreated UTI can become a full blown kidney infection, which is much more serious.

But there are some measures you can take that can help prevent UTIs. The women’s health organisation Jean Hailes recommends the following:

  • Drink plenty of water to flush out the urinary system
  • Go to the toilet as soon as you feel the need so bacteria does not have the chance to collect
  • Wipe from front to back after going to the toilet to avoid transfer of bacteria from the anus to the urethra
  • Go to the toilet immediately after sex to reduce the movement of bacteria into the urethra and drink plenty of water so that you need to go again in a few hours.

Cranberry 36 To 72 Milligrams Of Proanthocyanidins A Day In Divided Doses For Prevention

Cranberries have been used since the early 1800s for bladder problems. While many people automatically reach for supplements made from these bitter-tasting berries at the first sign of that familiar burning feeling, they work best when taken as a preventivejust like multivitaminsespecially for people vulnerable to UTIs. Cranberries are 90 percent water, but they also contain quinic acid, malic acid, citric acid, glucose, and fructose. In medical school, I was taught that quinic acid caused large amounts of hippuric acid to be produced and then excreted in the urine, which had an antibacterial effect, but recent studies have debunked that theory.

So how do they work? Current thinking is that fructose and proanthocyanidins especially type A block E. coli from adhering to the inside of the urinary tract. This is why you want to find a supplement with very high levels of PAC-A. Cranberry juice contains 37 percent PACs, on average, but cranberry also comes in syrup, capsules, and tablets.

Unfortunately, processing into pills, syrups, or what have you can lower the amount of PACs . Lab and clinical studies have found that taking anywhere from 36 to 72 milligrams of PACs daily reduces the risk of infection. The antiadhesion effects of PACs on bacteria decrease over the course of the day, which is why its best to take the supplement in both the morning and evening.

Cranberry supplements help prevent UTI in Multiple Sclerosis

THURSDAY, Feb. 25, 2016 â Contrary to popular belief, cranberry juice does not cure a urinary tract infection, a doctor says.

Many people drink cranberry juice in an attempt to ease their symptoms, but it will do nothing to help them, said Dr. Timothy Boone, vice dean of the Texas A& M Health Science Center College of Medicine, Houston campus.

âCranberry juice, especially the juice concentrates you find at the grocery store, will not treat a UTI or bladder infection,â he said in a center news release.

âIt can offer more hydration and possibly wash bacteria from your body more effectively, but the active ingredient in cranberry is long gone by the time it reaches your bladder,â Boone said.

Each year, more than 3 million Americans have a urinary tract infectionâ an infection in any part of the urinary system, kidney, bladder or urethra, according to the news release.

The active ingredient in cranberries â A-type proanthocyanidins â is effective against UTI-causing bacteria, but is found only in cranberry capsules, not in cranberry juice, Boone said.

âIt takes an extremely large concentration of cranberry to prevent bacterial adhesion,â Boone said. âThis amount of concentration is not found in the juices we drink. Thereâs a possibility it was stronger back in our grandparentsâ day, but definitely not in modern times.â

Cranberry Capsules More Effective Than Juice For Utis

A urinary tract infection is an infection in any part of the urinary system, kidneys, bladder or urethra. They are more common in women and affect more than 3 million Americans per year. Many in the population will turn to sipping on a cranberry juice cocktail to alleviate their symptoms, but, according to a Texas A& M Health Science Center urologist, drinking cranberry juice to treat a UTI is little more than an old wives tale.

Cranberry juice, especially the juice concentrates you find at the grocery store, will not treat a UTI or bladder infection, says Timothy Boone, MD, PhD, vice dean of the Texas A& M Health Science Center College of Medicine Houston campus and chairman of the department of urology for Houston Methodist Hospital. It can offer more hydration and possibly wash bacteria from your body more effectively, but the active ingredient in cranberry is long-gone by the time it reaches your bladder.

With that said, the active ingredient in cranberry can block the adhesion of bacteria to the wall of the bladder. For a UTI to occur, bacteria must adhere to and invade the lining of the bladder, Boone says. PACs interfere with the bacterias ability to bind to the wall of the bladder and create an infection.

In these instances, probiotics were shown to be safe alternative to antibiotics in the treatment of UTIs, Boone says. There are many benefits of probiotics, although more research still need to be done.

    What Is Urinary Tract Infection

The urinary tract extends from the kidneys down to the opening of the urethra.

A UTI can occur anywhere in the tract, including the kidneys, ureters , bladder, and urethra. A lower UTI occurs in the bladder or urethra , and an upper UTI occurs in the ureters or kidneys, which is known as pyelonephritis.

Approximately 85 to 90 percent of UTIs are caused by gram-negative bacteria, and about 75 to 95 percent of these bacterial infections are caused by Escherichia coli . Nonbacterial UTIs are relatively rare diabetics and people who use a catheter frequently are at higher risk of these types of infections.

Risk factors for UTIs include being female, sexual activity, certain types of birth control, diabetes, menopause, catheter use, and urinary tract obstruction . Uri- nary tract infections are 50 times more common in adult women than in adult men, probably due to the fact that the urethra is much shorter in women, so bacteria have a short trip to reach the bladder.

Also, during perimenopause and menopause a reduction in estrogen makes it more difficult for normal, healthy bacteria to survive, creating room for infection-causing bugs to get a foothold.

Infections in men may be an early indication of a kidney stone or an enlarged prostate.

Some common symptoms of a UTI include:

    • Dysuria
    • Frequency
    • Urgency
    • Hematuria
    • Pyuria
