    Emptying A Reusable Bag

*Please note that because a leg bag is smaller than a regular drainage bag, it will have to be emptied more frequently. Empty a leg bag when it is half-full, or at least twice a day.

  • Place a large plastic or metal container on the floor next to you. You may also empty urine directly into the toilet.
  • Wash your hands with soap and hot water. Although many urine collection bags have anti-reflux valves, it is very important to limit risk of bacterial contamination, which can cause infection.
  • Empty the bag. As mentioned above, different types of bags open in different ways, so you may see a drainage valve with a removable sleeve, a clamp that opens to the side, or an opening that you twist. Avoid touching the tip with your fingers, the toilet or the container while emptying.
  • When the bag is empty, clean the tip of the drainage valve with an alcohol wipe or swab, then close the clamp or twist on the leg bag.
  • Wash your hands again with soap and hot water. If you keep track of your urine volume for yourself or for a caregiver or doctor, write down how much urine was in your bag.
  • Please note, it is a good idea to occasionally secure the leg bag on the opposite leg. A good time to remember to make the switch is after a shower or bath.

    When To Contact A Doctor:

Of all catheter users, individuals with indwelling/foley catheters are at highest risk for infections of the urinary tract. Contact your healthcare provider if you have:

    • Milky, cloudy or foul-smelling urine
    • Red or pink urine
    • A fever greater than 101 degrees, or shaking chills
    • Pain or burning in your urethra, bladder, or lower back
    • Swelling, draining, or redness in your urethra

You should also contact your healthcare provider if no urine has drained from your catheter in six to eight hours, or if your catheter is leaking or falls out.

How Do I Change A Bard Catheter Bag

    Connecting to night drainage

If the bag has been emptied several times, medical professionals recommend changing it. Bard leg bags should be used for no longer than a 24-hour period. This is to prevent infection. When it is time to change the Bard leg bag, start by washing your hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water before you touch any part of the catheter system. Once your hands are clean, empty the bag as mentioned earlier. Then place a towel or bedpan beneath the connection of the catheter bag and the catheter. Clamp the tube with your fingers and disconnect the leg bag. Grab a new, sterile bag and connect as you did the first time. Slowly release your grip on the tube and ensure there are no leaks around the connection.

How To Use A Urinary Leg Bag

Buy Bard Dispoz a Bag Leg Bag

Using a urinary drainage bag is no rocket science but for somebody who has just started using them, it can be quite difficult in the beginning. Here is how you can use a catheter leg bag –

  • Keep hygiene in check: Wash your hands with soap and water before and after touching your catheter to avoid any chances of infection.
  • Strap it nice: Your leg bag can either be attached to your thigh or calf, whichever makes you feel comfortable. Make sure the leg bag straps are tied neither too tight nor too loose, as tight straps can hamper the blood circulation in your leg and too loose straps will not keep the bag in place properly.
  • Sterilize well: Use alcohol to clean the tip of the drainage tube before attaching it to the catheter. It will help the catheter remain germ and bacteria-free.
  • Avoid constant pulling: The connecting tube should not pull on your catheter. Skin breakdown can occur if there is constant pulling on the catheter.
  • Keep an eye on the tube: Check the tube often to make sure it is not kinked or twisted. Blockage in the tube can cause urine to back up into your bladder. Your urine must flow straight through the tube into your leg bag. Always keep the leg bag below your bladder. This prevents urine from the bag from going back into your bladder, which may cause an infection.
  • Clean the bag after use: It is recommended that you clean a urine bag after every use. It keeps the leg bag safe from infection and ready for next use.
