How Do I Empty A Bard Catheter Bag
A Bard catheter bag will collect urine drained from the bladder through the catheter tube. To use the bag, you will need to remove the protective cap and connect it to the drainage tube of the catheter. Once the bag is about three-quarters full, it is recommended to empty it out to prevent leaks. To empty your Bard urinary drainage bag, start by removing the outlet tube. You will have to squeeze the connector arm and gently pull the tube from its housing. Next, release the clamp and allow the fluid to drain from the bag. Once the bag has been fully emptied, clamp the outlet tube once more and get the connector arms to click back into place.

Emptying A Reusable Bag
*Please note that because a leg bag is smaller than a regular drainage bag, it will have to be emptied more frequently. Empty a leg bag when it is half-full, or at least twice a day.
Please note, it is a good idea to occasionally secure the leg bag on the opposite leg. A good time to remember to make the switch is after a shower or bath.

When To Contact A Doctor:
Of all catheter users, individuals with indwelling/foley catheters are at highest risk for infections of the urinary tract. Contact your healthcare provider if you have:
- Milky, cloudy or foul-smelling urine
- Red or pink urine
- A fever greater than 101 degrees, or shaking chills
- Pain or burning in your urethra, bladder, or lower back
- Swelling, draining, or redness in your urethra
You should also contact your healthcare provider if no urine has drained from your catheter in six to eight hours, or if your catheter is leaking or falls out.
How Do I Change A Bard Catheter Bag
If the bag has been emptied several times, medical professionals recommend changing it. Bard leg bags should be used for no longer than a 24-hour period. This is to prevent infection. When it is time to change the Bard leg bag, start by washing your hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water before you touch any part of the catheter system. Once your hands are clean, empty the bag as mentioned earlier. Then place a towel or bedpan beneath the connection of the catheter bag and the catheter. Clamp the tube with your fingers and disconnect the leg bag. Grab a new, sterile bag and connect as you did the first time. Slowly release your grip on the tube and ensure there are no leaks around the connection.

The tip of the catheter has a small balloon filled with solution that holds the catheter in your bladder. The catheter is attached to a drainage bag that holds the urine. A large drainage bag is usually used during the night. A leg bag can be worn under your clothes during the day. The leg bag is worn around your calf or thigh. It allows you to be in public without anyone knowing you have a catheter.
