When To Take Antibiotics For Utis
That said, Liu emphasizes that the new antibiotic still requires consumers to be cautious about when and when not to use antibiotics.
Antibiotics can come with side effects like allergic reactions, increasing the risk for future antibiotic-resistant infections, and can cause major disruptions in our microbiome, says Liu.
Therefore, as smart consumers we should not demand antibiotics if there is no bacterial infection and also it is always a good idea, if you are given a prescription, to ask whether it is really needed, she adds.
What Are The Side Effects Of Steroid Medications
Steroid medications can have serious long-term side effects, and the risk of these side effects increases with higher doses and longer term therapy. For this reason, steroid medications are usually prescribed only after other less potent drugs have proven insufficient in controlling your lupus. Your doctor will work with you to determine the lowest dose of steroids necessary to control your lupus symptoms and will prescribe steroids for the shortest possible amount of time. Steroids are sometimes combined with other drugs to help reduce some of these side effects.
Possible side effects of taking these steroid medications are:
- Changes in appearance
- Development of round/moon-shaped face
- Weight gain due to increased appetite
- Redistribution of fat, leading to swollen face and abdomen, but thin arms and legs
- Increased skin fragility, leading to easy bruising
- Hair growth on the face
Complicated Utis And Antimicrobial Resistance
Treatment of cUTIs has become increasingly complex due to the rising prevalence of multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria. The CDC has identified specificserious public health threats including extended spectrum beta-lactamases and the organism Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and has labeled carbapenemase-resistant Enterobacteriaceae an urgent threat.9
Clinicians are advised to consider local resistance patterns during selection of antimicrobial therapy , particularly for E coli since this microbe is responsible for 75% to 95% of uncomplicated cystitis and pyelonephritis. However, treatment of uncomplicated UTIs based upon data from hospital antibiograms remains an imperfect science. For example, these data may be skewed due to inclusion of samples from inpatient populations or patients with complicated infections. In addition, local in vitro resistance rates may change over time or be unknown. Thus, additional options for optimal care include identification of predictors of resistance unique to an individual patient, such as use of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in the preceding 3 to 6 months or travel outside the U.S.10

Dogs With Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is a condition that affects dogs and causes them to lose control of their urinations involuntarily. This is different from inappropriate urination where the dog will consciously urinate inside the home. Dogs with urinary incontinence is a common health problem and can often be treated with medications. There are many causes of urinary incontinence in dogs such as side effects to a medication, disorders of the urethral sphincter, systemic disease such as diabetes mellitus, and anatomical changes to the bladder. The earlier a diagnosis is made and treatment implemented, the better the chances are that the dog will respond favourably. How Is It Diagnosed
Your healthcare provider will ask about your symptoms and medical history. You may have lab tests of your urine and discharge from the urethra and prostate gland.
For serious or repeated infections, you may need:
- An intravenous pyelogram . An IVP is a special type of X-ray of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder.
- An ultrasound scan to look at the urinary tract.
- A cystoscopy. This is an exam of the inside of the urethra and bladder with a small lighted instrument. It is usually done by a specialist called a urologist.

Congenital diseases can include diabetes, a decrease in steroid production by the adrenal glands, and some rare psychological disorders.
Can Utis Be Treated Without Antibiotics
Liu says the best way to treat UTIs is to have a urine analysis.
You can do a urine test strip at home or submit a urine culture at a walk-in clinic if you cant get an appointment with your healthcare provider.
Dr. Swann says its best to consult with a medical expert who can account for ones personal history and circumstances and obtain a bacterial culture if needed.
Liu adds that a urine analysis is particularly important for people who:
- have recently had a UTI
- are immunocompromised
If you dont have any of these other concerns and you are treating at home, then you can take pain medication and also make sure that you are drinking plenty of water to see if symptoms improve, she says.
Nonantibiotic options for reducing symptoms associated with UTIs can include increasing water intake, suggests Moore.
In people who are post-menopausal, a life stage associated with a greater risk of UTIs, Moore says to try:
- topical estrogen to normalize vaginal pH and vaginal colonization with healthy bacteria
- treatment of bowel issues as they increase the risk of bacteria spread
- supplements , which prevent bacterial adherence to the bladder lining
Finally, when it comes to treating UTIs at home, bear in mind that cranberry supplements and cranberry juice are different.

Precautions While Using Prednisone
If you will be taking prednisone for a long time, it is very important that your doctor check you at regular visits for any unwanted effects that may be caused by prednisone. Blood or urine tests may be needed to check for unwanted effects.
Using prednisone while you are pregnant can harm your unborn baby. Use an effective form of birth control to keep from getting pregnant. If you think you have become pregnant while using prednisone, tell your doctor right away.
If you are using prednisone for a long time, tell your doctor about any extra stress or anxiety in your life, including other health concerns and emotional stress. Your dose of prednisone might need to be changed for a short time while you have extra stress.
Using too much of prednisone or using it for a long time may increase your risk of having adrenal gland problems. Talk to your doctor right away if you have more than one of these symptoms while you are using prednisone: blurred vision, dizziness or fainting, a fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeat, increased thirst or urination, irritability, or unusual tiredness or weakness.
Prednisone may cause you to get more infections than usual. Avoid people who are sick or have infections and wash your hands often. If you are exposed to chickenpox or measles, tell your doctor right away. If you start to have a fever, chills, sore throat, or any other sign of an infection, call your doctor right away.
What About Foods That Change Urine Color
Certain foods can change urine color, too. Usually this is a temporary change in color that normalizes after 12 to 24 hours. Here are some foods that can change urine color:
Carrots can tint urine orange.
Red foods, like beets or blackberries, can turn urine pink or red.
Rhubarb, asparagus, and fava beans can turn urine brown.
Foods rich in vitamin B can color urine bright yellow or green.
Any foods that have artificial food dyes can change the color of urine.

How Can I Take Care Of Myself
- Follow your healthcare provider’s treatment. Take all of the antibiotic that your healthcare provider prescribes, even when you feel better. Do not take medicine left over from previous prescriptions.
- Drink more fluids, especially water, to help flush bacteria from your system.
- If you have a fever:
- Take aspirin or acetaminophen to control the fever. Check with your healthcare provider before you give any medicine that contains aspirin or salicylates to a child or teen. This includes medicines like baby aspirin, some cold medicines, and Pepto Bismol. Children and teens who take aspirin are at risk for a serious illness called Reye’s syndrome.
- Keep a daily record of your temperature.
Medications That Can Turn Urine Blue Or Green
Its hard to miss blue or green urine. You can see blue or green urine as the result of food dye. Two medical conditions that lead to this color urine are certain bacterial UTIs and liver disease. If youre concerned about either of these potentially serious conditions, you should contact your healthcare provider.
Certain medications can also cause this color change:
Amitriptyline : This tricyclic antidepressant medication treats depression and neuropathy.
Cimetidine : This acid blocker addresses acid reflux and heartburn symptoms.
Indomethacin : This anti-inflammatory is part of gout treatment.
Methocarbamol : This muscle relaxant treats neck and back pain.
Metoclopramide : This medication treats nausea.
Promethazine : This antihistamine treats allergies and nausea.
Indomethacin : This nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug can provide pain relief.
Propofol : This anesthetic is common in surgery.
Methylene blue: This water-based dye is used in scans, surgery, and treatment for methemoglobinemia, a rare blood disorder.

Does Prednisone Make Dogs Act Weird
A few dogs on corticosteroids will develop what is often called steroid psychosis. These dogs appear to be out of touch with reality and are dangerously aggressive. Its important to not confront these dogs in any way as they are more likely to accept your challenge or attempt to control them with an attack.
What Do Steroids Have To Do With Urinary Tract Infections
One major side effect of taking anabolic steroids can be increased frequency and urgency to urinate.
This can lead to a UTI as bacteria can easily travel from your rectum, through the urethra, and into your bladder or kidneys where it can cause an infection.
It is important that if you notice these symptoms after taking a steroid product, then seek medical attention immediately so that your condition can be treated and managed properly.

Medications That Can Turn Urine Pink Or Red
Pink or red urine can be alarming. It can be a sign of blood, but that isnt always the case. There are also some medications that can lead to red or pink urine color:
Rifampin: This antibiotic is part of tuberculosis treatment. It also treats methicillin-resistant staph aureus infections. The pigment in the medication can cause a red or pink urine color. It can also give you pink saliva and tears.
Warfarin : This blood thinner treats and prevents blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks. Because it thins the blood, warfarin makes bleeding more common, including bleeding in your urine.

Prednisone Messes Up Neutrophil Count
It can make your neutrophils go crazy, either too high or too low. It can make your body release immature neutrophils, like little baby ones that were just growing, and have them stop adhering to the sides of your blood vessels and go out. Basically, its like a girl whos suddenly out on society before shes 14. You know, she shouldnt be getting ready to be married if shes 13. But thats what these neutrophils are doing. They are saying, Im ready to do my job. But theyre not, theyre little immature baby things.
And so, your immune system looks different when they test your blood levels. And it acts differently. So, some of the cells are completely wiped off and some of them are really high. And it just makes it trickier to tell, are you having an infection or not? And for people who have cancer or are taking other immunosuppressants, its even harder to tell. So, you need to be really careful. In the end, Ill tell you what we need to look for.
Practice Good Hygiene And Be Cautious
My second tip is, while prednisone does increase your risk for these opportunistic infections, theres no evidence showing that it increases your risk for cold and flu and your typical common infections. So, you dont need to be like a complete, you dont have to stay home all the time. You can still be around people, but you just need to take the precautions like washing your hands. And, you know what those are. What I want you to know is, you can still love your family, you can still be around them. You can still be around the people that matter to you. You just need to be watchful for signs of these random opportunistic infections that can happen.

Why A New Antibiotic For Treating Utis Is Needed
, PhD, the department head and a professor in the Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at North Carolina State University, says its exciting that there may be a new treatment for UTIs because we need more drugs to match with the specific bugs that we have, including for uncomplicated UTIs and for more complicated cases.
Liu adds there currently are limited options to treat the most common UTIs because resistance to one of the antibiotics has been steadily increasing.
Moore points to a 2021 report from the World Health Organization that cautioned there are not enough new antibiotics in development to overcome the increasing risk of antibiotic resistance.
Early and effective treatments are important because otherwise, it can develop into more severe kidney and blood infections that can be life-threatening, explained Liu.
