Treating Bacteriuria During Pregnancy

Do Cystex PLUS Urinary Pain Relief Tablets Interfere with UTI Test Results?

In people who arent pregnant, ASB isnt a big deal. It usually goes away without causing problems. During pregnancy, though, ASB is taken seriously. There is a high rate of ASB progressing to UTI and then on to pyelonephritis during pregnancy. In fact, data suggests that up to one-third of people with ASB during pregnancy will go on to develop kidney infection if it isnt treated. For that reason, people who are pregnant are tested for bacteriuria at prenatal visits. When bacteriuria is found, it is treated with antibiotics.

When bacteriuria is detected during pregnancy, a sample of the urine is also sent to a lab to start a culture. Although a urine culture takes a few days to grow, its important to identify what species of bacteria is causing the problem. Like most UTIs at other times, UTIs during pregnancy are mostly caused by a common type of bacteria called E. coli. In pregnancy, however, UTIs are sometimes caused by bacteria called Group B strep . Because GBS infection carries particular risks for pregnant people and babies, its important to check for it during pregnancy.

Potential Misuse Of Nonprescription Uti Products

    Cystex Urinary Pain Relief Tablet

The danger of carcinogenicity with phenazopyridineapparently remains open. However, the FDA and the manufacturersoverlooked a far more likely scenario that could cause patient harm. If awoman has a UTI, she should make an appointment with a physician toreceive the appropriate antibacterial/antimicrobial prescription. If sheunwisely chooses to take an OTC product as her sole treatment, she mayexperience relief of discomfort and assume that she does not need to seea doctor. By doing so, she avoids the trouble of providing a urinespecimen and saves the associated costs of a physician office visit. Should she fail toobtain a prescription, her UTI may continue, worsening as the days passwithout effective treatment.

Manufacturers responsibly urge purchasers on productlabels to obtain a diagnosis and use the product only for relief whilethey are waiting to see their physicians or for the prescription tobegin to work. The labels also warn against use for more than 2 days.Despite the presence of these warnings, research conducted by theNational Council on Patient Information and Education confirmed thatpurchasers often disregard package labels.9 In this case, disregarding the label could lead to permanent kidney damage.6 Thus, the advice and assistance of the pharmacist is crucial when consumers request these products.

Uti Symptoms: The Why And The What

Lots of things can cause a UTI, but they all boil down to the presence of bacteriasomethings there that shouldnt be. There are several reasons why, but sex is a big one. In fact, nearly 80 percent of premenopausal women diagnosed with a UTI, have had sex within the previous 24 hours.2 During sex, bacteria from the genital area and the anus can come into contact with the urethra and after a quick trip up the urethra, it causes inflammation. The use of diaphragms and spermicide can also contribute to the development of UTIs, as could sex with a new partner or frequent intercourse.2One reason women are especially at-risk has to do with basic plumbinga womans urethra is significantly shorter than a mans, which means that the bacteria have a shorter distance to travel in order to cause infection. Also, in women, the opening of the urethra is closer to the anusmaking the trip for bacteria even shorter.3Other causes for UTIs range from simple things like holding your pee for too long, instances of extreme dehydration, stones in your kidneys or bladder, to catheterization or certain chronic conditions like diabetes.

    Uti Testing In Pregnancy

    Cystex Review

The standard test for a UTI is a urine culture. This is done by watching a urine sample for several days and measuring the growth of bacteria. Normally, urine is sterile, which means no bacteria should grow. If bacteria do grow, laboratory specialists can do more testing to determine what kind of bacteria they are.

A urinalysis is a faster urine test. For this test, urine is studied under a microscope and checked for signs of infection. The result of a urinalysis can point to a UTI, but it cant determine what kind of bacteria are causing it.

Most providers offices also do a dipstick or spot test of urine samples. These rapid tests are helpful because they are done in just a few minutes and can show signs of infection when a UTI is present. The downside of rapid urine tests is that they provide much less information than either a urinalysis or a urine culture.

Urine tests for infection are not the same tests that are done to check for pregnancy. Having a UTI does not affect a pregnancy test result and vice versa.

    Manufacturers Respond To The Fda

The FDA received at least three responses to its list ofphenazopyridine questions within a 6-month period. The ConsumerHealthcare Products Association asked the FDA to reviewphenazopyridine, but completely sidestepped the issue ofcarcinogenicity.11 A submission from PolymedicaPharmaceuticals asserted that urinarydiscomfort should be self-treatable, and further argued against warningpatients on product labels that they may need a concomitantantibacterial.12 Polymedica also claimed that phenazopyridinedosages of 190 to 195 mg are safe and effective, but did not submitclinical dosage studies to support its assertions. Polymedica arguedagainst including any carcinogenesis statement. In short, the submissionwas entirely laudatory about phenazopyridine, although it did notreport newly conducted clinical studies, as would have been required bythe FDA to establish safety and efficacy.

A brief submission from Johnson & Johnson made essentially the same arguments as Polymedica, denying theneed for carcinogenicity labeling.13 This submission also failed to include new clinical studies providing evidence of safety and efficacy.

    Let Kidney Stones Pass

Stones typically take several weeks to a few months to pass, depending on the number of stones and their size. Over-the-counter pain medications, like ibuprofen , acetaminophen , or naproxen , can help you endure the discomfort until the stones pass. Your doctor also may prescribe an alpha blocker, which relaxes the muscles in your ureter and helps pass stones quicker and with less pain.

If the pain becomes too severe, or if they are too large to pass, they can be surgically removed with a procedure called a ureteroscopy. Here, a small endoscope is passed into the bladder and up the ureter while you are under general anesthesia. A laser breaks up the stones, and then the fragments are removed.

    Staying hydrated

When you are pregnant, staying hydrated is important to the health and development of your baby.

Beyond prenatal health benefits, drinking water consistently can also provide benefits to your urinary tract health.

Studies show that drinking water and staying hydrated can help flush out bacteria and infection from the urinary tract.

    Drinking cranberry juice

Cranberry can be consumed in the form of unsweetened juice or convenient supplement pills.

Drinking unsweetened cranberry juice is a popular remedy for treating UTIs. A few studies suggest that cranberry juice may help prevent UTIs, but no research supports the idea that cranberry juice can cure or treat a UTI beyond easing some of the uncomfortable symptoms.

One study shows the ingredients in cranberry juice may help prevent infection-causing E. coli bacteria from collecting on the cells inside the walls of the bladder and urinary tract, which can reduce the risk of developing a UTI. Another study shows cranberry helps to stop bacteria from lingering in the urinary tract, which might help preventing infection, though more research is needed to confirm this holds true for people.

Research shows that cranberry juice does not put the mother and baby at risk when consumed during pregnancy. Studies suggest promising results from using cranberry juice to manage UTIs while pregnant.
