Advanced Prostate Cancer Symptoms

UTI, Body Alkalies, Prostate Cancer, Yeast Infection, Fibroid

Men with advanced prostate cancer may experience additional symptoms. Thats because the cancer has spread from the prostate to other parts of the body, such as the bones or lymph nodes.

Signs of metastatic prostate cancer may include:

  • Swelling in legs or pelvic area
  • Numbness or pain in the hips, legs or feet
  • Bone pain that persists or leads to fractures

A wide range of treatment options are available for managing advanced cancer. These treatments kill cancer cells, but they may also help patients manage pain.

Causes Of Bladder Infection

Blader infections, sometimes called cystitis or urinary tract infections , are when a germusually bacteriatakes up residence in the bladder. Bladder infections are the most common type of UTI, but UTIs can develop in any part of the urinary tract.

The infection causes inflammation and disrupts the normal working of the urinary tract. If left untreated, these infections can also spread to the kidneys, which is more dangerous and painful.

Bladder infections are caused by bacteria from other parts of the body entering the urinary tract. In females, this bacteria typically comes from the vagina or the bowel. In males, bladder infections are usually due to issues like enlarged prostate, which restrict normal urine flow.

Problems After High Intensity Focused Ultrasound

Youre more likely to get urinary problems after HIFU if youve already had other treatments for prostate cancer. Possible urinary problems include:

  • difficulty urinating
  • urine infections.

Difficulty urinating

HIFU usually causes the prostate to swell for a week or two, so youll have a catheter to drain urine from your bladder until the swelling has gone. HIFU can also cause the urethra to become narrow, making it difficult to empty your bladder .

Leaking urine

HIFU can cause some men to leak urine when they cough, sneeze or exercise . This may be more likely if youve already had radiotherapy. There are ways to manage leaking urine.

Urine infections

Some men get a urine infection after HIFU. If this happens, youll be given a course of antibiotics to clear the infection.

Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer

Once a tumor causes your prostate gland to swell, or once cancer spreads beyond your prostate, you may have symptoms including:

  • The need to pee often, especially at night
  • Trouble starting or stopping a stream of urine
  • A weak stream or one that starts and stops
  • Leaking pee when you laugh or cough
  • Not being able to pee standing up
  • Pain or burning when you pee
  • Pain or burning when you ejaculate
  • Less fluid when you ejaculate
  • Blood in your pee or semen
  • Pressure or pain in your rectum
  • Pain or stiffness in your lower back, hips, pelvis, or thighs
  • New trouble getting an erection

These arenât symptoms of the cancer itself. They happen because the cancer growth is blocking your prostate.

What Is Prostate Cancer

Urinary Tract Infection Treatment

In prostate cancer, normal cells undergo a transformation in which they not only grow and multiply without normal controls, but they also change in their microscopic appearance and can invade adjacent tissues. Prostate cancer cells form into malignant tumors or masses, which then overwhelm surrounding tissues by invading their space and taking vital oxygen and nutrients. Cancer cells from these tumors can eventually invade remote organs via the bloodstream and the lymphatic system. This process of invading and spreading to other organs is called metastasis. Common metastatic locations where prostate cancer cells may eventually be found include pelvic lymph nodes, and bones. The lungs and the liver may also show deposits of, or metastases from, prostate cancer, but that is less common.

Almost all prostate cancers arise from the glandular cells in the prostate. Cancer arising from a glandular cell in any organ in the body is known as adenocarcinoma. Therefore, the most common type of prostate cancer is an adenocarcinoma. The most common non-adenocarcinoma is transitional cell carcinoma. Other rare types include small cell carcinoma and sarcoma of the prostate.

Older men commonly have an enlarged prostate, caused by a benign condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia . Prostate gland cells simply keep growing in number in the prostate gland in BPH. BPH can cause urinary symptoms but is not a form of prostate cancer .

Symptoms Of A Urinary Tract Infection

As with any infection, the body responds rapidly and predictably. However, symptoms of a UTI can mimic those of other conditions, so visit a qualified physician at the first signs or urinary trouble.

  • Pain or burning sensation when urinating
  • Urgency and/or frequency in urination
  • Feverish feeling
  • Strange smelling urine

A diagnosis begins with a visit to a qualified physician or urologist who will perform a simple urine test. This, combined with a medical history, should yield a cause of the symptoms. If there are any questions or uncertainties as to the origin of symptoms, additional tests will be performed.

What Can You Do To Prevent Infections

  • For recurring bladder infections: Have your bacterial flora tested by a doctor or alternative practitioner. Again, there is a close relationship between the vaginal and intestinal flora and healthy intestinal and vaginal flora provide good protection against infections.
  • Always drink plenty so that no pathogens can establish in the urinary tract.
  • To protect the vaginal flora, you should avoid underwear made of synthetic fibres, tampons and constant use of panty liners.
  • Symptoms in the urinary tract may also have a psychological component. This is reflected in idioms such as it gets me down or in the term largest teardrop in the body for the bladder. Continuously recurring urinary tract infections are commonly associated with a psychological toll: Learn and practice relaxation techniques!
  • Pay attention to personal hygiene: Wash the genitals: from the front to the back!- Avoid use of fragrances in personal care products in the genital area- Use breathable underwear made from cotton
  • Try to pass urine within 15 minutes of having sex

What Is The Difference Between Prostatitis And A Uti

This is another situation where symptoms are very similar.

Where cystitis is the inflammation of the bladder, prostatitis is simply the inflammation of the prostate gland. And, like cystitis, the most common cause of this is an infection.

Interestingly, the source of this infection is often a UTI, as the bacteria from the bladder can make their way into the prostate. So, where an enlarged prostate can cause UTIs, prostatitis can be a result of a UTI, and they symptoms of all three can overlap. You can see how they can easily get mixed up!

Prostatitis can have very similar symptoms to both UTIs and an enlarged prostate, including pain when urinating, frequent and urgent urination, using the toilet during the night and difficulty starting. However, a few key differences are that it can also cause general pain in the pelvic area, can affect sexual function and can occur in men of all ages. Its particularly common in men aged between 20 and 40.

Rectal Swab And Culture

Prostatitis (Prostate Inflammation): Different Types, Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Series where rectal swab cultures were obtained prior to the procedure can be stratified into those where the antibiotic prophylactic regimen was not altered based on the results and those where it was tailored based on the culture and sensitivity profile.

Steensels et al reported on 342 patients who underwent rectal swab/cultures prior to TRUSPB between 2009 and 2010. Patients were excluded if the cultures were negative, had no antibiotic prophylaxis, or antibiotics other than FQ. Of the remaining 236 patients, 52 had cipro resistant E. coli. Seven of 236 patients developed bacterial UTIs, all with cipro resistant E. coli. By comparison, no patient with a rectal swab culture revealing cipro sensitive organisms developed a bacterial UTI .

Minamida et al reported on 100 patients who had a rectal swab culture prior to TRUSPB between April and December 2010 at the Kitasato University Hospital . Antibiotic prophylaxis consisted of levofloxacin 500 mg PO QD for 3 days beginning 2 hours before biopsy. Thirteen patients had cultures positive for FQ-resistant E. coli 4 of 13 had a bacterial UTI compared with 0 of 87 patients with cultures revealing FQ sensitive organisms .

Does A Bladder Infection Increase Prostate Cancer Risk

Prostate cancer can contribute to UTIs such as bladder infection.

But is their relationship a two-way street? The evidence says yes.

LUTI

PLoS One journal published a study that analyzed whether lower urinary tract infection such as cystitis links to increased prostate cancer risk.

Scientists evaluated data of 14,273 men with LUTI. Results showed the risk of prostate cancer was significantly higher in men with a history of cystitis and urethritis than in counterparts who never had LUTI.

Moreover, men with more than five LUTI-related medical visits a year had a much higher risk of developing prostate cancer.

In other words, recurrent infection of the bladder increases the risk of prostate cancer.

Its not that clear why LUTIs such as bladder infection increase the risk of prostate cancer.

A possible explanation is that cystitis causes bacterial prostatitis , which leads to prostatic carcinogenesis.

Inflamed tissue, especially after recurrent bladder infection, produces active oxygen and nitrogen radicals that increase cancer risk.

They do so by suppressing antitumor activity and stimulating carcinogenesis .

Age

We cant rule out the age factor here. Prostate enlargement is a common age-related condition. It can constrict the urethra, where it passes through the prostate gland. In turn, urination becomes less efficient.

Inadequate emptying of the bladder creates a fertile ground for bacteria. They start multiplying rapidly, making you more prone to infections.

Takeaway

Apply A Poultice To Relieve Lower Abdominal Pain

How about trying a traditional remedy to obtain some relief? Our grandmothers used to swear by a soothing leek poultice for relieving the pain of lower urinary tract infections.

How do you make one? Cook the leeks in a large pan of salted, boiling water and allow to cool to a lukewarm temperature. Then layer the cooked leeks onto the painful area and leave for at least 15 minutes or until cold. Repeat 3 times day depending on the pain intensity.

Management Of Urinary Dysfunction

Because the urinary symptoms following radiation therapy are irritative in nature, drugs that improve urinary flow and treat irritative bladder symptoms are commonly prescribed to all men following radiation therapy for at least a few weeks. They are gradually withdrawn as symptoms improve. In cases of persistent urinary incontinence, surgical procedures, including a sling that relieves pressure buildup in the abdomen or artificial sphincters provide long lasting results.

Does Prostatitis Increase Prostate Cancer Risk

Prostate Cancer Treatment

Current evidence suggests that prostatitis, or other prostate problems, does not increase a persons chances of developing prostate cancer.

However, a person with prostatitis may be more likely to receive a prostate cancer diagnosis. This is because they may have more interactions with healthcare professionals and diagnostic testing, leading to the detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Researchers are investigating whether inflammation may contribute towards the eventual development of prostate cancer, but as yet, no evidence indicates this.

What To Do If You Think You Have A Uti

The first thing you should really do is go to your GP so they can double check that this change in symptoms is definitely a bladder infection. If you havent been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate yet, then it is vital that you go to the GP, because if BPH isnt causing your infection then it is important to make sure there is no underlying problem such as diabetes.

The doctor may prescribe you antibiotics to help shift the infection, particularly if it is severe. However, there are also a few ways to treat a UTI at home:

Drink plenty of water. This will help to flush the bacteria out of the bladder and will make urination less painful.

Reduce sugar intake. Bacteria love sugar, so starve them by reducing your sugar intake!

Try cranberries. Cranberries are commonly used to ease UTI symptoms, as they are thought to prevent bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls, making it easier to flush them out. However, cranberries can be incredibly bitter, so most cranberry juices are full of sugar. Instead Id recommend our own Cranberry Complex, which contains fresh cranberry as well as other bladder-friendly herbs like horseradish and golden rod. You could also try Biottas Cranberry Juice, which is sweetened with agave nectar and birch leaf infusion.

Top up on vitamin C. This vitamin is famous for supporting the immune system, so it can help your immune cells fight off the infection.

What You Can Do To Help

Drink plenty of fluids at least 6 to 8 glasses each day. Dont cut down on your fluids. You can drink plenty during the day, but it might help to limit fluids 2 hours before bedtime.

Some people think that cranberry juice can help but others feel it makes the soreness worse. Research studies havent found that it helps. Dont drink cranberry juice if you are taking warfarin.

You might find that some drinks increase the soreness, such as tea and coffee. You can experiment for yourself and see what works for you. Dont take potassium citrate, which is an old fashioned remedy for cystitis. You might hear it called mist pot cit for short. This drug can be very harmful if taken in large amounts.

You might notice blood in the urine. Let your doctor know if this happens. It usually stops after a few days or weeks. In some men it may last for months or years.

The problem here is that the symptoms of a UTI are often very similar to the symptoms of BPH frequent urination, urgent urination and pain/discomfort while urinating.

However, there are a few indications of a UTI that differ from those of an enlarged prostate. Look out for unpleasant-smelling urine, cloudy urine and a burning sensation when urinating. Take a look at our cystitis symptoms pages for a better idea.

Even Just One Infection May Be Enough To Start Chronic Inflammation Says Sfanos

Circumcision the surgical removal of the flap of skin at the tip of the penis, usually done a few days after birth helps protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Several studies from around the world have shown men who are circumcised are less likely to get HIV, HPV , syphilis, genital herpes, and penile cancer.

Circumcision also lowers your risk of getting prostate cancer. So what is it about the foreskin, that small flap of skin, that raises the cancer risk? Its not the flap itself its simply that the extra layer of skin provides a potential breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. Circumcision seems to be protective in that it takes away one extra shelter for bacteria.

So Does Safe Sex

And that brings us to the subject of sex in general. Men who have not had a history of STDs and who ejaculate more frequently have a slightly lower risk of getting prostate cancer the thought here is that this cleans house, and keeps semen moving through the male plumbing, taking with it any bacteria and other potential cancer causing chemicals that it might pick up when passing through the prostate. So thats good.

And Then Theres the Barrier

What might disrupt that barrier? Charred meats. He continues: Charred meats can injure the prostate in rodents.

If we could figure out whether inflammation is driving the cancer, says De Marzo, if its causing 20, 30, even 50 percent of prostate cancer, maybe just by reducing inflammation, we could make a huge difference.

Causes Of Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is when cells of the bladder lining grow out of control and start spreading to other parts of the organ and, potentially, other parts of the body. This growth can disrupt the normal functioning of the bladder and other essential organ systems. If untreated, bladder cancer can be deadly.

The Types And Causes Of Prostate Infections

Female Urologist in Noida

When the gland is infected, it gets bigger. Usually, the men between the ages of 30 and 50 suffer from infected prostate but this condition is observed in older or younger men too.

There are 4 types of infection in the prostate gland. They have different symptoms and they are caused by different pathogens .

The four types are:

  • Chronic bacterial prostatitis
  • Prostatodynia

The most common causes of prostate infections are fungi, genital viruses, and streptococcal staphylococcal organisms. There are two ways for these organisms to enter the prostate.

First, by entering the prostate trough the prostate ducts. The other is by leaving the infected urine and again trough the ducts, the organism will end up in the prostate gland.
